"The Ballroom Blitz" is a song by British glam rock band The Sweet, written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. The song reached number one in Canada, number two in the UK Singles Chart and the Australian Chart, and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Background "The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Palace Theatre, Kilmarnock, Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a Bottling (concert abuse), bottling. History and description The song was recorded on 11–12 June 1973 at Audio International Studio, 18 Rodmarton Street, London, and released as a single in September 1973. The song appeared on the US and Canadian versions of ''Desolation Boulevard'' but never appeared on a Sweet album in the UK, other than hits compilations. The Sweet
Sweet (known as the Sweet until the early 1970s) are a British glam rock band who rose to prominence in the 1970s. Their best-known line-up consisted of lead vocalist Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker. The band formed in London in 1968, originally with the name the Sweetshop, and achieved their first hit, " Funny, Funny", in 1971, after teaming up with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and record producer Phil Wainman. During 1971 and 1972, their musical style showed a marked progression, from the Archies-like bubblegum style of "Funny, Funny" to a Who-influenced hard rock style, supplemented by a use of high-pitched backing vocals. The Surf Punks were a pop punk band formed in 1976 by Malibu residents Dennis Dragon (1947-2017) and Drew Steele (d. October 2021). (Dragon was the son of symphony conductor Carmen Dragon, the brother of Captain & Tennille's Daryl Dragon, and he was previously the drummer of the Byrds and the Beach Boys. Steele's stepfather was Gavin MacLeod of McHale's Navy, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Love Boat fame.) "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" is a song by English punk rock band the Damned from their 1979 album, '' Machine Gun Etiquette''. Released as a single in November on Chiswick Records, it peaked at No. 46 in the UK Singles Chart. Production The single was heavily edited for radio airplay, removing the spoken word monologue, though the version on the record is unaltered. The first track on the B-side, a cover of Sweet's " Ballroom Blitz", was recorded with Lemmy of Motörhead fame on bass guitar. "Turkey Song" was not credited on the sleeve. The Damned (band)
The Damned are an English rock band formed in London in 1976 by lead vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist (and later guitarist) Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies. They were the first punk band from the United Kingdom to release a single, " New Rose" (1976), release a studio album, '' Damned Damned Damned'' (1977) and tour the United States. Nine of the band's singles charted on the UK Singles Chart Top 40. The band briefly dissolved after '' Music for Pleasure'' (1977), the follow-up to their debut studio album, was critically dismissed.
