The Appropriate Technology Library
The Appropriate Technology Library consists of 1050 books on 29 subject areas of small scale, do-it-yourself technology. Originally developed by Volunteers in Asia VIA (formerly Volunteers In Asia and Trans-Pacific Exchange) is an independent, non-sectarian, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to increasing understanding between the U.S. and Asia. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and founded in 196 ... (VIA) it was transferred to Village Earth: The Consortium for Sustainable Village-Based Development in 1993. The Library was developed to be a low-cost and portable source of appropriate technology information for aid and relief workers around the world. Do-it-yourself
"Do it yourself" ("DIY") is the method of building, modifying, or repairing things by oneself without the direct aid of professionals or certified experts. Academic research has described DIY as behaviors where "individuals use raw and semi-raw materials and parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g., landscaping)". DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement ( craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness). The term "do-it-yourself" has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 primarily in the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities. VIA (formerly Volunteers In Asia and Trans-Pacific Exchange) is an independent, non-sectarian, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to increasing understanding between the U.S. and Asia. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and founded in 1963, VIA provides two kinds of programs. VIA's Asia Programs offer Americans the chance to live and volunteer in Asia, while VIA's Stanford Programs enable East Asian university students the opportunity to participate in multi-week themed programs in the United States. Village Earth
Village Earth: The Consortium for Sustainable Village-Based Development (CSVBD) DBA: Village Earth is a publicly supported 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Fort Collins, Colorado, US. The organization works for the empowerment of rural and indigenous communities around the world with active projects with the Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, the Shipibo-Konibo of the Amazon region of Peru, India, Cambodia, and Guatemala. Village Earth is associated with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) at Colorado State University.
