The Animation Showcase
The Animation Showcase is a travelling film screening collection, showcasing animated short films. Background With the support of the private members club Soho House, the showcase started in 2016 with the goal of finding upcoming creative talents in the animation industry and promoting animation in the creative industry. The Animation Showcase hosts a yearly "Best of the Year" screening, highlighting films that are likely to become shortlisted and eventual nominees for the Academy Awards Best Animated Short Film category. The Animation Showcase has been screened in major animation studios, startups, and locations, including Pixar Animation Studios, Laika, Disney Animation Studios, DreamWorks, Google San Francisco, YouTube London, Blur Studio, Cartoon Network, and Soho House (London, New York, Berlin, Shoreditch East London). Soho House
Soho House is a museum run by Birmingham Museums Trust, celebrating Matthew Boulton's life, his partnership with James Watt, his membership of the Lunar Society of Birmingham and his contribution to the Midlands Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. It is a Grade II* listed 18th-century house in Handsworth, West Midlands, Handsworth, part of Birmingham since 1911, but historically in the county of Staffordshire. It was the home of entrepreneur Matthew Boulton from 1766 until his death in 1809, and a regular meeting-place of the Lunar Society. Fx Goby
François-Xavier Goby (born 27 September 1983, Grasse) is a French director and illustrator based in London. Biography Fx Goby studied animation at Supinfocom, a pioneer school in computer animation in Valenciennes. He graduated in 2006 with a short animated film '' En Tus Brazos'', co directed with Edouard Jouret and Matthieu Landour, that toured festivals around the world and won awards, including a SIGGRAPH 2007 Award of Excellence. After living in Paris for three years, he moved to London joining Nexus Productions. He formed the directing duo Fx and Mat with university friend Matthieu Landour and directed several commercials and music videos including a Coca-Cola Super Bowl commercial in 2011. ''To Build a Fire'' (French: ''Construire un Feu'') is a 2016 French animated short film directed by Fx Goby adapted from the 1902 and 1908 short story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London. Alan Barillaro
Nicolas Alan Barillaro is a Canadian director, animator and writer at Pixar best known for his work on the animated short film ''Piper'', that earned him widespread acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film which he shared with the film's producer Marc Sondheimer. Barillaro also attended Sheridan College in Oakville. In 2023 Barillaro published the middle grade novel ''Where the Water Takes Us''. ''Piper'' is a 2016 American animated short film produced by Pixar Animation Studios. Written and directed by Alan Barillaro, it was theatrically released alongside Pixar's ''Finding Dory'' on June 17, 2016. The Head Vanishes
''The Head Vanishes'' (French:''Une tête disparaît'') is a 2016 Canada/France animated short by Franck Dion about a woman with dementia who is determined to make her annual train trip to the seaside. Production Co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada, Papy3D Productions and ARTE France, the film was partly inspired by Dion's experiences with his great-grandmother, with whom he was close and saw deteriorate mentally while he was a child. Dion began to work on the film in 2014, after deciding to depart from a feature-film project. A key narrative element in the film is the central character literally "losing her head" on the train trip—again inspired by a true-life anecdote involving his ill grandmother, who had once asked Dion's mother to fetch her head from under the sink, believing that it had rolled under there. Theodore Asenov Ushev (; born 4 February 1968) is a Bulgarian animator, film director and screenwriter based in Montreal. He is best known for his work at the National Film Board of Canada, including the 2016 animated short '' Blind Vaysha'', which was nominated for an Academy Award. He is a Chevalier of the ''Ordre des Arts et des Lettres'' of France. Life and career Ushev was born on 4 February 1968 in Kyustendil, Bulgaria, and graduated in stage decoration, animation, and make-up at Plovdiv's School of Scenic Arts. ''Blind Vaysha'' (French: ''Vaysha l'aveugle'') is a 2016 animated short by Theodore Ushev, produced by Marc Bertrand for the National Film Board of Canada, with the participation of ARTE France. Based on a story by Georgi Gospodinov, the film tells the story of a girl who sees the past out of her left eye and the future from her right—and so is unable to live in the present. Montreal actress Caroline Dhavernas performed the narration for the film, in both its French and English language versions. The film incorporates music from Bulgarian musician and composer Kottarashky and is his and Ushev's fourth collaboration. ''Borrowed Time'' is a 2015 American animated Western short film directed by Pixar artists Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj. Plot In the Old West, a sheriff and his young son are traveling on a wagon trail. The sheriff gives his son his own pocket watch and his hat for good luck. During their trek, their stagecoach is attacked by bandits. While the sheriff attempts to fend off their attackers, the son drives the wagon, but loses control when it collides with a rock, breaking a wagon wheel, and causing the sheriff to be flung over a nearby cliff's edge. The son recovers, and observes the damage. As he looks around, he finds his father hanging on to a lower rock ledge.
