Thaden Metal Aircraft Company
The Thaden Metal Aircraft Company was an American aircraft manufacturer based in San Francisco, California in the late 1920s. History The company was founded by Herbert von Thaden in 1928 to design and build a series of all-metal cabin monoplanes. In 1929 the company was renamed the Pittsburgh Metal Airplane Company when it was bought by the Pittsburgh Aviation Industries Corporation for $100,000. The company failed to break into the commercial market and collapsed, PAIC sold the company to the General Aviation Corporation in 1930 and it was renamed the Metalair Corporation. __NOTOC__ The Thaden T-1 Argonaut was a 1920s American eight-seat all-metal cabin monoplane, built by the Thaden Metal Aircraft Company of San Francisco, California. Description and history The Thaden T-1 was a high-wing strut-braced monoplane, constructed of corrugated aluminum, and powered by a Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engine. It had a fixed conventional landing gear with a tailskid. Only one example was built (X3902); its first flight was on 15 January 1928, and its final flight ended in 1933 in a crash in Alaska. Design and development The T-4 was the third and last design of the Thaden Metal Aircraft Company which had been formed by Herbert von Thaden, a former United States Army Signal Corps pilot and engineer, to work on developing the first American all-metal aircraft. Iris Louise McPhetridge Thaden (born Louise McPhetridge; November 12, 1905 – November 9, 1979) was an American aviation pioneer, holder of numerous aviation records, and the first woman to win the Bendix trophy, alongside Blanche Noyes. She was inducted into the Arkansas Aviation Historical Society's Hall of Fame in 1980. Birth and education Louise McPhetridge was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, and attended Bentonville public schools. McPhetridge attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from 1921 to 1926 and studied as a journalism, physical education, and pre-medical major. Aviation In 1926, McPhetridge was working for the J.H.J. Turner Coal Co. where one of her main customers was the Travel Air Corporation in Wichita, Kansas, owned by Walter Beech. Beech liked McPhetridge and offered her a job as a sales representative in San Francisco, California, which she accepted. Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Aircraft
The ''Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft'' was a weekly partwork magazine by Aerospace Publishing (an imprint of Orbis Publishing) which was published in the United Kingdom (and sold in other countries too) during the early 1980s. The magazine was intended to eventually make up a multi-volume encyclopedia dedicated to aviation. First issued in 1981, the partwork comprised 216 issues, each of twenty pages (plus the covers), making up eighteen volumes (4280 pages). The first two issues were sold together for the price of one, subsequent issues were sold on their own. Empty binders for each volume (of twelve issues) were also sold. These binders were dark blue in colour and contained the imprint of a Panavia Tornado on the front. They held the issues using a metal strip that was threaded through the staples of each issue to hold them in place. Each issue consisted of four separate sections.
