Texas ( , ; or , ) is the most populous state in the South Central region of the United States. It borders Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and an international border with the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south and southwest. Texas has a coastline on the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast. Covering , and with over 31 million residents as of 2024, it is the second-largest state by both area and population. Texas is nicknamed the ''Lone Star State'' for its former status as an independent republic, the Republic of Texas. Spain was the first European country to claim and control Texas. Following a short-lived colony controlled by France, Mexico controlled the land until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming the Republic of Texas. "Texas, Our Texas" is the regional anthem of the U.S. state of Texas, adopted in the late 1920s as the official state song. History It was written in 1924 by William J. Marsh, who was born in Liverpool, United Kingdom, and emigrated to Texas as a young man, and Gladys Yoakum Wright, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and selected as the official state song by a concurrent resolution of the Texas Legislature in 1929 following a statewide competition. Older songs, such as " The Yellow Rose of Texas" and " Dixie", were also considered but ultimately it was decided a new song should be composed. Although the song has been sung since the 41st legislature in 1929, it was officially adopted by the 73rd legislature as the state song in 1993. The song is usually played and sung just before the national anthem, with a display of the flag.
