Texas ( , ; or ) is the most populous state in the South Central region of the United States. It borders Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and has an international border with the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south and southwest. Texas has a coastline on the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast. Covering and with over 31 million residents as of 2024, it is the second-largest state by area and population. Texas is nicknamed the ''Lone Star State'' for its former status as the independent Republic of Texas. Spain was the first European country to claim and control Texas. Following a short-lived colony controlled by France, Mexico controlled the land until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming the Republic of Texas. "Texas, Our Texas" is the regional anthem of the U.S. state of Texas, adopted in the late 1920s as the official List of U.S. state songs, state song. History It was written in 1924 by William John Marsh, William J. Marsh, who was born in Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom, and emigrated to Texas as a young man, and Gladys Yoakum Wright (1891–1956), of Fort Worth, Texas. It was selected as the official List of U.S. state songs, state song by a concurrent resolution of the Texas Legislature in 1929 following a statewide competition. Older songs, such as "The Yellow Rose of Texas (song), The Yellow Rose of Texas" and "Dixie (song), Dixie", were also considered but ultimately it was decided a new song should be composed. Although the song has been sung since the 41st legislature in 1929, it was officially adopted by Seventy-third Texas Legislature, the 73rd legislature as the state song in 1993. Democratic Party Of Texas
The Texas Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Texas and one of the two-party system, two major political parties in the state. The party's headquarters are in Austin, Texas. President Lyndon B. Johnson was a Texas Democrat. 39 out of the 48 politicians who have served as Governor of Texas have been Texas Democrats. The party used to be the dominant political party in Texas; however, like in other Southern states, its rival, the Republican Party of Texas has become the dominant party since the 1990s. Texas has not elected any Democratic candidates to statewide office since 1994. Texas has the longest streak of any state for not electing Democrats to any statewide office, and has not voted Democratic in a presidential election since 1976. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), founded as the Geological Survey, is an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior whose work spans the disciplines of biology, geography, geology, and hydrology. The agency was founded on March 3, 1879, to study the landscape of the United States, its natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten it. The agency also makes maps of planets and moons, based on data from U.S. space probes. The sole scientific agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, USGS is a fact-finding research organization with no regulatory responsibility. It is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, with major offices near Lakewood, Colorado; at the Denver Federal Center; and in NASA Research Park in California. In 2009, it employed about 8,670 people.
