Texas Hotel Records
Texas Hotel Records was an independent record label based in Santa Monica, California, which released records by singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt, Henry Rollins and the Rollins Band from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. The label, which started as a record store and later expanded into a record label, was founded by Michael Meister and Susan Farrell. Texas Hotel was voted ''Hot Record Label of the year'' by ''Rolling Stone'' in 1989. At the time, it was planning to release a solo album by Michael Stipe, and the band Poi Dog Pondering, which was signed to the label, had attracted attention. However, Stipe's solo album was not released, and Poi Dog Pondering moved to Columbia Records, without major success. Texas Hotel Records closed in 1996. In ''Rolling Stones 1000th issue, published in May 2006, Texas Hotel's subsequent lack of success was pointed out, as well as the fact that no Wikipedia article existed for the label at the time. An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small and medium-sized enterprise, small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. ''Is the Actor Happy?'' is an album by the American folk rock musician Vic Chesnutt, released in 1995. The title of the album's first track was used as the subtitle to a 1996 benefit album, '' Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation'', recorded to raise funds for Chesnutt's health care. Chesnutt supported the album by touring with Friends of Dean Martinez. The album was reissued by New West Records in 2004. Background and production The album was produced by John Keane. Michael Stipe contributed vocals to "Guilty by Association". Chesnutt wrote the songs while opening for Live on a 1994 tour. James Victor Chesnutt (November 12, 1964 – December 25, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter from Athens, Georgia. His first album, ''Little'', was released in 1990. His commercial breakthrough came in 1996 with the release of '' Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation'', a charity record of alternative artists covering his songs. Chesnutt released 17 albums during his career, including two produced by Michael Stipe, and a 1996 release on Capitol Records, '' About to Choke''. His musical style has been described by Bryan Carroll of AllMusic as a "skewed, refracted version of Americana that is haunting, funny, poignant, and occasionally mystical, usually all at once". Injuries from a 1983 car accident left him partially paralyzed; he used a wheelchair and had limited use of his hands. ''Little'' is the debut album by Vic Chesnutt, released in 1990. Produced by R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, it was Chesnutt's first solo release. The album was re-released on July 5, 2004, on the New West Records label and included five bonus tracks. Overview Deciding to pursue a solo career after the band, La-Di-Das, broke up, Chesnutt would play solo at the 40 Watt Club. It was there that R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe first spotted Chesnutt and helped him to produce his first album. ''Little'' was recorded in one day: October 6, 1988, and the session was produced by Michael Stipe at John Keane's studio in Athens, Georgia. It was released on Texas Hotel Records in 1990. Hetch Hetchy is a valley, reservoir, and water system in California in the United States. The glacial Hetch Hetchy Valley lies in the northwestern part of Yosemite National Park and is drained by the Tuolumne River. For thousands of years before the arrival of settlers from the United States in the 1850s, the valley was inhabited by Native Americans who practiced subsistence hunting-gathering. During the late 19th century, the valley was renowned for its natural beauty – often compared to that of Yosemite Valley – but also targeted for the development of water supply for irrigation and municipal interests. ''Hard Volume'' is the second studio album by American rock band Rollins Band, released in 1989. It was reissued with previously unreleased tracks in 1999 through Buddah Records. The original CD release contained a 32-minute jam on the Velvet Underground outtake "Move Right In," titled "Joy Riding with Frank." The track was recorded live in Linz, Austria, during the band's 1988 tour. The 1999 remastered edition replaced this track with six studio tracks: three from the album session at Echo Sound in Los Angeles in December 1988, and three from a demo session recorded in July 1988 at Graphic Studios in New Jersey.
