United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church (UMC) is a worldwide mainline Protestant denomination based in the United States, and a major part of Methodism. In the 19th century, its main predecessor, the Methodist Episcopal Church, was a leader in evangelicalism. The present denomination was founded in 1968 in Dallas, Texas, by union of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The UMC traces its roots back to the revival movement of John and Charles Wesley in England, as well as the Great Awakening in the United States. Texarkana is a city in Bowie County, Texas, United States, in the Ark-La-Tex region. Located approximately from Dallas, Texarkana is a twin city with neighboring Texarkana, Arkansas. Cedar Creek Reservoir is a reservoir located in Henderson and Kaufman Counties, Texas ( USA), southeast of Dallas. It is built on Cedar Creek, which flows into the Trinity River. Thorndale, Texas
Thorndale is a city in Milam County, Texas, with a small part in Williamson County. The population was 1,263 at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1878 about 3 miles west of its present site, and moved to its current site in 1880. History Antonio Gómez, a Mexican-American teenager, was lynched on June 19, 1911, in Thorndale following his lethal stabbing of a German-American garage owner, Charles Zieschang. Concerns about prejudice and violence against Mexican-American youths, such as the Gómez hanging, inspired Jovita Idar to found the League of Mexican Women (La Liga Femenil Mexicanista). A bishop is an ordained clergy member who is entrusted with a position of authority and oversight in a religious institution. Cynthia Fierro Harvey
Cynthia Fierro Harvey (born 1959) is an American bishop in the United Methodist Church and president of its Council of Bishops. She is the first Hispanic woman to lead the Council of Bishops. Harvey is the Resident Bishop of the Louisiana area, and oversees the Louisiana Annual Conference. An annual conference is a regional decision-making body within various Methodist denominations. Conferences are a key characteristic of the connectional system of government in Methodism.
