''Tests'' is an album by The Microphones. It was first released as a cassette tape The Compact Cassette, also commonly called a cassette tape, audio cassette, or simply tape or cassette, is an analog audio, analog magnetic tape recording format for Sound recording and reproduction, audio recording and playback. Invented by L ... on Knw-Yr-Own in 1998. A CD release by Elsinor followed in the same year, but the track listing was a mixture of The Microphones's three previous albums: ''Microphone'', ''Wires and Cords'', and the ''Tests'' cassette. Most of the material was recorded at The Business while Elverum worked there. ''Tests'' was re-issued on cassette in an edition of 20 by P.W. ELVERUM & SUN, ltd. The re-issue was to celebrate Record Store Day 2011 and was only available at The Business in Anacortes, WA. A few additional copies were sold online via P.W. ELVERUM & SUN, ltd. The Microphones
The Microphones were an American indie folk, indie rock, and experimental project from Olympia, Washington. The project was founded in 1996 and ended in 2003, with a short reunion following in 2007 and revivals in 2019 and 2020-22. Across every iteration of the Microphones, the band's only permanent member was Phil Elverum. Elverum is the principal songwriter and producer behind the band's albums, but a rotating cast of several other musicians feature on his recordings and tours. Many of Elverum's recordings from the project's initial period were released by the label K Records. Since 2003, Elverum has recorded and performed primarily under the name Mount Eerie. He played a one-off concert in Anacortes, WA under the name the Microphones in June 2019 and announced the release of the fifth and final Microphones album, '' Microphones in 2020'', in August 2020. Indie Folk
Indie folk (also called alternative folk) is an alternative genre of music that arose in the 1990s among musicians from indie rock scenes influenced by folk music. Experimental Music
Experimental music is a general label for any music or music genre that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions. Experimental compositional practice is defined broadly by exploratory sensibilities radically opposed to, and questioning of, institutionalized compositional, performing, and aesthetic conventions in music. ''Don't Wake Me Up'' is the debut studio album by American musical project the Microphones. It was released by K Records on August 24, 1999, and reissued on vinyl via P.W. Elverum & Sun on April 16, 2013. The album was recorded between April 25, 1998, and March 1, 1999, in studios in Olympia and Anacortes, Washington. ''Don't Wake Me Up'' is a lo-fi rock and indie rock album that uses metaphorical and sometimes cryptic lyricism. The album also includes field recordings, as well as elements of pop and noise rock. It received positive reviews from AllMusic, ''Pitchfork'', and Sputnikmusic. Record Store Day is a semi-annual event established in 2008 to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store".
