''Tess'' is a 1979 epic film, epic romantic drama, romantic drama (film and television), drama film directed by Roman Polanski, and starring Nastassja Kinski, Peter Firth, and Leigh Lawson. Adapted from Thomas Hardy's 1891 novel ''Tess of the d'Urbervilles'', the screenplay was written by Gérard Brach, John Brownjohn, and Polanski. The film received positive critical reviews upon release and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Picture, winning three for Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Best Cinematography, Academy Award for Best Production Design, Best Art Direction and Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Best Costume Design. Plot The story takes place in Thomas Hardy's Wessex during the 1880s.
