Tennholmen Lighthouse
Tennholmen Lighthouse ( no, Tennholmen fyr) is a coastal lighthouse in Bodø Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the Vestfjorden on one of the Tennholman islands, just west of the Givær islands, about due west of the town of Bodø. The tall light is mounted on the roof of a -story wood house where the keeper lived. The lighthouse is painted white and the light tower is red. The light sits at an elevation of above sea level. The white light flashes once every 30 seconds. The 487,600- candela light can be seen for up to . The light is active from dusk to dawn from 4 August until 2 May each year. The light is inactive during the summers due to the midnight sun in the region. Candela
The candela ( or ; symbol: cd) is the unit of luminous intensity in the International System of Units (SI). It measures luminous power per unit solid angle emitted by a light source in a particular direction. Vestfjorden
Vestfjorden is a long fjord or oceanic sea in Nordland county, Norway. The name literally means "the west fjord", although it is called a fjord, it could best be described as a firth or an open bight of sea. The "fjord" lies between the Lofoten archipelago and the Salten district of mainland Norway. The term fjord (from the old Norse ''fjördr'' meaning firth or inlet) is used more generally for bodies of water in the western Scandinavian languages than the more narrow usage assigned in English. The Vestfjord flows from the area near the town of Narvik to the west and southwest. Midnight Sun
The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in places north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle, when the Sun remains visible at the local midnight. When the midnight sun is seen in the Arctic, the Sun appears to move from left to right, but in Antarctica the equivalent apparent motion is from right to left. This occurs at latitudes from 65°44' to 90° north or south, and does not stop exactly at the Arctic Circle or the Antarctic Circle, due to refraction. Lighthouses In Norway
The coast of Norway is 100,915 km long and there have been a total of 212 lighthouses along it, but no more than 154 have ever been operational at the same time. The first, Lindesnes Lighthouse, opened in 1655; the newest Lighthouse, Anda, was finished in 1932. The first Lighthouses were private operations, but in 1821 the government made the Channel and Harbor Inspector responsible for Lighthouses in Norway. A dedicated Lighthouse Administration was set up in 1841. The Lighthouses are today mostly automated and since 1974, run by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Two lightvessels had been operated along the Norwegian coast.
