Tennessee State Route 279
State Route 279 (SR 279) is a east–west state highway in Franklin County, Tennessee. Route description SR 279 begins as Spring Creek Road in Estill Springs at an intersection with US 41A/ SR 16 (N Main Street) just north of downtown. It heads north through neighborhoods before making a sharp turn to the east, where it leaves Estill Springs and passes through rural farmland. The highway then becomes Morris Ferry Bridge Road, at an intersection with Beth Page Road, and passes through wooded areas to cross a bridge over the Elk River, just shortly before passing just south of the Elk River Dam. SR 279 winds its way northeast along the banks of the Woods Reservoir, where it passes by Franklin County Park, before coming to an end at an intersection with SR 127. The entire route of SR 279 is a two-lane highway. Estill Springs, Tennessee
Estill Springs is a town in Franklin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,267 at the 2020 census. It is usually referred to simply as "Estill" by its inhabitants. Estill Springs is part of the Tullahoma, Tennessee, Micropolitan Statistical Area and is located in Middle Tennessee. History Founding Mineral springs in the area had long been known to the Cherokee people of the region. Before they settled here, varying cultures of indigenous peoples had lived in the area for thousands of years. The European-American town dates from ''circa'' 1840, when the Frank Estill family, which owned considerable property in the area, donated a right-of-way for railroad construction. The combination of mineral waters, which were much in vogue as a health remedy at the time, and convenient rail access caused the settlement to develop as a small-scale spa town, which took its name from the springs. State Route 16 (SR 16) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Tennessee. Its southern terminus is at the Alabama state line, where it continues as State Route 79 (SR 79) in Alabama. From there, it continues to Winchester, where it becomes unsigned in a concurrency with U.S. Route 41A (US 41A). This concurrency lasts until its northern terminus in Williamson County, at a junction with U.S. Route 31A (US 31A). The Elk River Dam, completed in 1952, impounds the Elk River in the US state of Tennessee to form the Woods Reservoir. Woods Reservoir
Woods Reservoir is a 3,600 acre reservoir created by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for use as a cooling system for the United States Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Center. The US Air Force and Arnold Engineering Development Center own and operate Woods Reservoir. The reservoir and dam were built primarily for cooling for the Wind Tunnels that would be built on the base. According to a study by St. Louis, Missouri-based engineering firm Sverdrup & Parcel, the amount of water required annually for AEDC operations would be more than 22.4 billion gallons. Of this, the vast majority – nearly 21 billion gallons – would serve as cooling water for the test facilities. The remainder would be used for air conditioning, sanitary water and fire protection.
