Tenjō-ji
, officially or , is a Shingon Buddhist temple in eastern Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. The temple is located on Mount Maya () in the Nada ward of Kobe. History Tenjō-ji was, by tradition, established during the Asuka period (538 – 710) by the semi-mythical monk Hōdō (fl. 7th century). Hōdō, by tradition, was born in India, and traveled to Japan via China and the Baekje kingdom in Korea. Hōdō cured an illness of the Emperor Kōtoku (596 – 654), who then sent the monk to establish numerous Buddhist temples. According to legend Hōdō founded Tenjō-ji in 646. In the 8th century, another High Monk Kobo brought back a statue of Maya, the mother of Buddha from China, and dedicated it to this temple. Tenjō-ji was an influential temple for a long time, but the original temple which was located very near to the top of the mountain was burned by a pyromaniac in 1975. Hōdō
Hōdō (法道) or Hōdō Sennin (法道仙人) was an Indian hermit and sage. According to legend, from the 6th to 7th centuries CE, Hōdō traveled from India peninsula through Tang China and the Korean kingdom of Baekje and eventually arrived in Japan. He is recognized as the founder of temples in the mountains of Harima Province and is associated with several ''chokugan-ji'' (勅願寺), Buddhist temples built at the request of the reigning emperor. Tradition holds that when Hōdō came to Japan, he was accompanied by the deity Gozu Tennō (牛頭天王; Sanskrit: ''Gośīrṣa devarāja''), who was later enshrined at Hiromine Shrine and Yasaka Shrine and is venerated in the Gion faith. While engaged in ascetic practice on Mount Rokkō at the Kumoga Iwa Rock (雲ヶ岩), Hōdō is said to have been approached by the deity Vaiśravaṇa riding on purple clouds. Emperor Kōtoku
was the 36th emperor of Japan,Imperial Household Agency (''Kunaichō'') 孝徳天皇 (33)/ref> according to the traditional List of emperors of Japan, order of succession. The years of his reign lasted from Asuka period, 645 through 654. Traditional narrative Before Kōtoku's ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, his personal name (''imina'') was or . Mount Maya
is a mountain in Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. This mountain is one of the major peaks of the Rokkō Mountains, and is the most popular peak for visitors on the West-Rokkō Mountains. Outline Mount Maya is one of the two centers in Rokko Mountains for tourists. Mount Maya has a link from the foot of the mountain to the top. Those are Maya Cableway and Maya Ropeway. This mountain has also easy access to the foot through Okumaya Driveway. Mount Maya area was linked to the Kinenhidai area and the top of Mount Rokko by bus. This mountain is a part of Setonaikai National Park, and famous for the view from the mountain. Especially from Kikuseidai, a park just aside of the top of the mountain, visitor can see all over Osaka Bay area including, Kobe, Nishinomiya, Amagasaki, Osaka, Sakai, and two major airports in this area, Kansai International Airport and Kobe Airport.
