Tenant Union Federation
The Tenant Union Federation (TUF) is a national federation of tenants' unions in the United States, describing itself as a "union of unions". The TUF was founded in 2024 by the Kansas City Tenants Union, Connecticut Tenant Union, Louisville Tenant Union, Bozeman Tenants United and Not Me We. The Director of the Tenant Union Federation is currently Tara Raghuveer. Establishment The COVID-19 pandemic saw tenants face increased housing insecurity, due to many landlords' hiking rents, as well as an increased threat of eviction during lockdowns and slowed economic activity. KCUR
KCUR-FM (89.3 MHz) is a public, listener-supported radio station in Kansas City, Missouri, broadcasting over the Kansas City metropolitan area and parts of Missouri and Kansas. Strategic Organizing Center
The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC), formerly known as the Change to Win Federation (CtW), is a coalition of North American labor unions originally formed in 2005 as an alternative to the AFL–CIO. The coalition is associated with strong advocacy of the organizing model. The coalition currently consists of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the United Farm Workers (UFW), and the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the latter of which is affiliated with both the SOC and the AFL–CIO. Michael Zucker is currently listed as the Executive Director of the organization since 2020. The SOC also includes SOC Investment Group, a shareholder engagement arm of the SOC that challenges management of large, publicly traded companies targeted by the SOC's campaigns. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) is a national trade union center that is the largest federation of unions in the United States. It is made up of 61 national and international unions, together representing nearly 15 million active and retired workers. 2024 Kansas City Metropolitan Area Rent Strike
Since October 1, 2024, members of the Kansas City Tenants Union have been on rent strike. The union's members in Kansas City, Missouri and Independence, Missouri voted to take the action after failed negotiations with their landlords and Fannie Mae. Tenants of Independence Towers and Quality Hill Towers—the two apartment complexes involved with the dispute—have complained about poor living conditions, with maintenance reports going unaddressed. This is the first rent strike in the area since 1980, and the first ever targeting the federal government of the United States. The goals of the strikers are federal rent regulation, collectively bargained leases, and new ownership for the complexes.
