Tejano Roots Hall Of Fame
The Tejano Roots Hall of Fame (TRHF) was created in August 2000 by Rito Silva in Alice, Texas. The Texas Legislature proclaimed the city of Alice as the birthplace of Tejano music, and opened the Tejano Roots Hall of Fame and Museum in Alice. The museum exhibits costumes, photographs, and other memorabilia donated by inductees. The 1997 Grammy Awards statue given to La Mafia is included in the museum as well as the accordion La Mafia member La Mafia, Armando Lichtenberger used during his group's tour in Mexico. The inaugural ceremony inducted 14 musicians all from San Antonio, Texas, the number increased to over 80 individuals in recent years. Paulino Bernal
Paulino Bernal (June 22, 1939 – September 10, 2022) was an American accordion player and Christian evangelist. He was a member of the Texano Tex-Mex group Conjunto Bernal. In 1972, Paulino converted from the apostolic Christian Evangelical and founded Bernal Christian Records to evangelize his Protestant Christian beliefs. Bernal owned and operated more than a dozen Spanish Language religious radio stations in Texas, which carried a satellite-fed programming schedule through his La Nuevo Cristiana ministry. In 2008 Paulino Bernal released a new CD of polkas produced by Grammy-winning producer Armando Lichtenberger Jr., "El Maestro Del Accordion Y Sus Polkas" on Urban Records and received his first Grammy nomination for Best Polka Album for the 51st Annual Grammys. Chelo (Consuelo Silva) was a popular singer of Mexican bolero music who had a long career, spanning from the 1930s to the 1980s. She was born in 1922. She belongs to the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Early life She was born in Brownsville, Texas, on August 25, 1922, the eldest of seven children. As a teenager, Silva performed with her school and church, eventually performing locally with a local group, Tito Crixell Orchestra. Career Silva became popular in Brownsville and was invited to perform on Americo Paredes' radio show. She continued to perform on the radio, as well as at the Continental Club in Corpus Christi, Texas, gaining popularity quickly through her spin on the romantic song style. Roberto Pulido
José Roberto Pulido (born March 1, 1950), known as Roberto "El Primo" Pulido, is an American musician whose career spans five decades. Pulido has been recognized as a Tejano music pioneer for his introduction of the accordion and saxophone into his music which "helped bridged the traditional conjunto and the modern Tejano camps" in the mid-1970s. Esteban "Steve" Jordan (February 23, 1939 – August 13, 2010) was a jazz, rock, blues, conjunto and Tejano musician from the United States. He was also known as "El Parche", "The Jimi Hendrix of the accordion", and "the accordion wizard". An accomplished musician, he played 35 different instruments. Life Born in Elsa, Texas to migrant farm workers and partially blinded as an infant, Jordan was unable to work in the fields. Left at home, he found friendship and guidance among the elderly. Mazz is a Tejano band originally from Brownsville, Texas. The band was known for their idiosyncratic and innovative form of Tejano cumbia which made them distinguishable among their counterparts. Mazz became one of the most popular Tejano music bands during the genre's 1990s golden age. Mazz won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and in 2009, the most wins for a Tejano musician. They landed their first major recording contract with EMI Latin in the early 1990s, before switching to Freddie Records in 1999. Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez formed Mazz in 1978 before disbanding and creating smaller bands throughout their careers. Ventura Alonzo
Ventura Martínez Alonzo (December 30, 1904 – December 14, 2000) was a Mexican-born American musician. She was known as the "Queen of the Accordion". She was born Ventura Martínez in Matamoros and moved to Brownsville, Texas with her family in 1909. Her father taught her to play the piano. The family lived in Kingsville for several years and then moved to Houston in 1917. Alonzo married a man named Gallegos. Together, they had 3 sons. The couple later divorced and she married Frank Alonzo in 1931. The couple formed a group known as Alonzo y Sus Rancheros; she played accordion and piano and was lead vocalist.
