Teignmouth (album)
Teignmouth is the first studio album by the neoclassical dark wave band Love Is Colder Than Death. It was released in Europe in 1991 by the Hyperium music label in both LP and CD formats. Earlier that year Hyperium had released the three song ''Wild World'' vinyl EP. Love Is Colder Than Death (band)
Love is Colder Than Death, commonly abbreviated LiCTD or LICTD, is an early German neoclassical dark wave band that was one of the cornerstones to Hyperium Records' ''Heavenly Voices'' compilation series of the early 1990s. It is named after the 1969 Fassbinder film '. The band's music is characterized by its extensive use of both romantic and classical styled male and female vocals. Founded by Ralf Donis, Maik Hartung, Sven Mertens, and Susann Heinrich in 1990, the band members and music have changed slightly since then. The first few LICTD albums were released on the Hyperium record label in Europe and on the new Metropolis Records label in the United States. The band's album ''Teignmouth'' was the first Metropolis Records release, and remains one of LICTD's more popular albums. Following the departure of Donis, the more experimental songs that characterized some of the early LICTD work gave way to a much more classical sound. Neoclassical dark wave is a subgenre of dark wave music that is characterized by an ethereal atmosphere and soprano vocals as well as strong influences from classical music. Historical context In the middle of the 1980s, the bands Dead Can Dance and In the Nursery released influential albums which essentially laid the foundations of the Neoclassical dark wave genre. In 1985 Dead Can Dance released ''Spleen and Ideal'', which initiated the band's 'medieval European sound.' In 1987 In the Nursery released Stormhorse, which exhibited a symphonic/post-industrial sound lending itself to 'being envisioned as backing music for a dramatic epic.' Hyperium Records was a German independent record label specializing in darkwave, neoclassical, ethereal, gothic rock, and ambient music, founded by Oliver Roesch (also known as "Oli" Roesch) and Oliver van Essenberg in 1991. Roesch died on August 1, 2002 in a motorcycle accident. Releases ''Heavenly Voices'' compilations Hyperium released a series of ''Heavenly Voices'' compilation series, which featured prominent use of female vocals in a neo-classical, neofolk, world music, trip hop or ethereal style. "Heavenly Voices" has often been used as a genre term, particularly during the mid to late 1990s. Love Is Colder Than Death claim that the series was inspired by their music. Dark Wave Albums
Darkness, the direct opposite of lightness, is defined as a lack of illumination, an absence of visible light, or a surface that absorbs light, such as black or brown. Human vision is unable to distinguish colors in conditions of very low luminance. This is because the hue sensitive photoreceptor cells on the retina are inactive when light levels are insufficient, in the range of visual perception referred to as scotopic vision.
