Tehtaankatu
Tehtaankatu () is an east-to-west street in southern central Helsinki. It leads from the border of Kaivopuisto park near South Harbour, Helsinki, South Harbour to Hietalahti shipyard. Most of the street is in Ullanlinna district, but its westernmost part forms the border between Eira and Punavuori districts. Since the end of the Second World War, the Soviet and later Embassy of Russia, Helsinki, Russian embassy has been located on Tehtaankatu, and the name of the street has been commonly used as shorthand for Russian influence in Finland, especially during the Soviet era. Both the Finnish name Tehtaankatu and the Swedish name Fabriksgatan mean "Factory Street". The names were given to the street in 1887, because at that time an industrial zone was planned at the area which is now Eira. That plan was soon abandoned, but the name has remained. Villa Hjelt
Villa Hjelt is a villa located on the Tehtaankatu street opposite Mikael Agricola Church in the Eira district in Helsinki, Finland. The building, completed in 1912, was designed by architect Gustaf Estlander (1876–1930). History The building was commissioned by Dr. E. Roos, who, however, died soon after the building was completed. At that time, the building was bought by businessman (1885–1940), who carried out alterations designed by architect Eliel Saarinen to the building, including the main staircase and living spaces. Hjelt presented villa in the 1910s as the residence of Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse, who was chosen as the King of Finland, and the current Presidential Palace would have remained for the use of the court. However, the Kingdom of Finland project never came to fruition, and in the 1920s Allan Hjelt ran into financial difficulties. Eira Hospital (, ) is a private hospital in southern part of Helsinki, Finland. It has given its name to the adjacent Eira district of Helsinki. The architectural landmark is located at Tehtaankatu and Laivurinkatu cross, with address at Tehtaankatu 30 in Helsinki. Ullanlinna
(; ) is a city district of Helsinki, in Finland. The name ''Ullanlinna'' () refers to the fortification line that was built at the southern edge of the area during the 18th century (no longer visible), as part of the town fortifications, which also included the fortress of . The name refers to the Swedish Queen Ulrika Eleonora (1688–1741). During the 19th century the area was dominated by summer pavilions owned by the wealthy Helsinki middle-classes. Lars Sonck
Lars Eliel Sonck (10 August 1870 – 14 March 1956) was a Finnish architect. He was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Finnish architecture, known for his role in developing the National Romantic and later Nordic Classicism movements in Finland. Sonck graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Helsinki (now Aalto University) in 1894. That same year, at age 23, he won the design competition for St Michael's Church, Turku, marking his professional breakthrough. While the church was designed in the Neo-Gothic style, Sonck’s later work evolved through Art Nouveau, National Romanticism, and ultimately Nordic Classicism during the 1920s. Mikael Agricola Church
Mikael Agricola Church (, ) is a Lutheran church located in the Punavuori district of Helsinki, Finland. It was designed by Lars Sonck and built between 1933 and 1935. The church was inaugurated on 14 April 1935. It is named after bishop Mikael Agricola. Architecture The church is made of red bricks. The tower of the church is 97 meters high, the top reaching up to 103 meters above sea level. The 30-meter spike of the tower can be retracted if necessary as it fits inside the tower structure. Gustaf Estlander
Gustaf Axel Estlander (18 September 1876 – 1 December 1930) was a Finnish architect and one of the most successful Scandinavian yacht designers of the early 20th century. He was born and educated in Finland, later set up a yacht yard in Germany, and spent his final years in Sweden. As a sporty youth, Estlander in 1894 sailed from Finland to Sweden in a canoe. He was an accomplished skater, winning the 1898 European Speed Skating Championships for Men in Helsinki, Finland. He also competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics.
