Tehran City Council (1968–1979)
Tehran City Council () was the directly elected city council of Tehran and the first such institution to convene in Iran, serving as a model for other city councils in the country. It formalized selection of Mayor of Tehran, designated by the Ministry of Interior. The council had 30 members and 12 committees each with 5 members, with each member able to chair up to two. The members met once per week in an open session attended by the mayor and journalists. The council suffered from the weakness of democratic accountability, lack of administrational and financial autonomy and limited scope of authority. The last elections to the council took place in 1976 and it was abolished in 1979 when the Iranian Revolution took place. Islamic City Council Of Tehran
The Islamic City Council of Tehran () is the directly elected City council, council that presides over the city of Tehran, elects the mayor of Tehran in a mayor–council government, mayor–council government system, and budgets of the Tehran, Municipality of Tehran. The council is composed of twenty one members elected on a plurality-at-large voting basis for four-year terms. The chairman and the deputy chairman of the council are chosen by the council at the first regular meeting in odd-numbered years. It holds regular meetings on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am (except on holidays or if decided by special resolution not to meet). 1968 Iranian Local Elections
The first ever local elections in Iran were held in 1968, to elect the members of city and town municipal councils (''Anjoman''). The elections were scheduled for the beginning of May, however after being delayed several times, it started on 4 October 1968 for 175 local councils. The result was a victory for the Iran Novin Party, New Iran Party. According to Dilip Hiro, 90% of the voters in Tehran abstained, a way to mildly express dissent. Results Out of 173 councils up for election, the results for 7 cities were annulled, including Sanandaj, Mehriz, Nahavand and Khansar, Iran, Khansar. The Iran Novin Party, New Iran Party managed to gain majority in 148 councils and in 115 of them, it won all of the seats (including the capital, Tehran). 1976 Iranian Local Elections
Local elections were held in Iran on 15 October 1976 to elect the members of 435 municipal councils, 162 city and town councils, and 238 regional educational councils. The Iranian Revolution (, ), also known as the 1979 Revolution, or the Islamic Revolution of 1979 (, ) was a series of events that culminated in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1979.
