Ted Whitfield
Edward Carlyle Whitfield (13 June 1916 – 7 September 1993) was an Australian rules footballer, playing with South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Born in North Melbourne, Whitfield was recruited by South Melbourne from Victorian Football Association (VFA) side Coburg Football Club and made his VFL debut in Round 12, 1939 against Carlton at Lake Oval, South Melbourne's home ground. A wingman, Whitfield was considered a live wire, both on the ground and off, who appeared "to march to a different drum." The Coburg Football Club, nicknamed the Coburg Lions, is an Australian rules football club based in Coburg, Victoria, Coburg, a northern suburb of Melbourne, and currently playing in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The 1945 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the South Melbourne Football Club and Carlton Football Club, held at Princes Park in Melbourne on 29 September 1945. It was the 47th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1945 VFL season. The match, attended by 62,986 spectators, was won by Carlton by a margin of 28 points, marking that club's seventh premiership victory. The game was noted and remembered for its rough play and a number of violent incidents, out of which seven players were suspended. The Ararat Football Club, nicknamed the ''Rats'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the city of Ararat, Victoria. The football team currently competes in the Wimmera Football League (WFL). History Formed in 1871, Ararat won eight premierships in the Wimmera and District Football Association during the early 20th century. From 1924 to 1928, they played in the Ballarat Football League. They did not return to the Wimmera league until 1930, as they were forced to sit out of the competition for a year as punishment for their earlier defection. The Wimmera Football League is a major Australian rules country league based in Western Victoria, with clubs located in towns in the Wimmera region: the regional centres along the Western Highway from Ararat to Nhill as well as Minyip-Murtoa and Warracknabeal.
