Tearce Attack
The Tearce attack was an attack carried out by the National Liberation Army on a Macedonian police station in Tearce, North Macedonia. This attack marked the beginning of the 2001 insurgency in Macedonia. As a result of the attack, one police officer was killed and three others were injured and the NLA captured Tearce. Attack The attack took place on 22 January 2001, on a Monday at 2:00 AM in the village of Tearce, which is inhabited largely by ethnic Albanians. During the attack, three or four NLA militants armed with a Chinese rocket launcher and two Kalashnikovs attacked a Macedonian police station. The militants killed the police officer Momir Stojanovski in the attack, who was killed by the RPG grenade, while three other policemen were seriously injured. The 2001 insurgency in the Republic of Macedonia was an armed conflict which began when the ethnic Albanians in North Macedonia, Albanian National Liberation Army (North Macedonia), National Liberation Army (NLA) insurgent group, formed from veterans of the Kosovo War and insurgency in the Preševo Valley, attacked North Macedonia, Macedonian Army of the Republic of North Macedonia, security forces at the end of January 2001, and ended with the Ohrid Agreement, signed on 13 August of that same year. There were also claims that the NLA ultimately wished to see Albanian-majority areas secede from the country, though high-ranking members of the group have denied this. Tearce
Tearce ( , ) is a village located 12 km to the northeast of Tetovo, in northwestern North Macedonia, about 15 kilometres from the border with Kosovo. It is a seat of the Tearce municipality. Population 3,974 (2002). The B-405 road connects it to Tetovo. History According to the notes of Bulgarian teacher Andrea Stoyanov collected 1866-90 and published 1891–92 in the Istanbul gazette ''Novini'', the village of Tearce had 120 Albanians, Albanian and 80 Bulgarians, Bulgarian houses. The village had a school, a church, 4 stores, 2 blacksmiths and 1 tack shop. The inhabitants worked as livestock farmers, with many also working seasonally overseas. The Christians worked mainly as bakers, while Muslims work as maltsters. National Liberation Army (Macedonia)
The National Liberation Army (NLA; , UÇK; , ONA), also known as the Macedonian UÇK (; ), was an ethnic Albanian militant militia that operated in the Republic of Macedonia in 2001 and was closely associated with the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). Stevo Pendarovski (, ; born 3 April 1963) is a Macedonian politician who served as the President of North Macedonia from 2019 to 2024. Early life and education Stevo Pendarovski was born on 3 April 1963 in Skopje. His family originates from Galičnik. He grew up in post-earthquake Skopje. His parents were teachers.
