Team Scandia
Team Scandia was a short-lived American auto racing team that competed in the Indy Racing League between 1996 and 1999, also entering the 1998 NASCAR Cup and the 24 Hours of Daytona on three occasions. The team traces its origin to when Andy Evans bought much of Dick Simon Racing from Dick Simon during the 1996 IRL season. As such, Simon was listed as the owners of some of Scandia's cars in the 1996 Indianapolis 500; in which the team fielded a record 7 cars. The team tried to achieve a similar feat with five cars in the 1997 Indy 500, but with higher expenses brought by new chassis, the venture was less successful. Later that season, the team captured its only IRL victory with a car driven by Eliseo Salazar at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team shut down in 1999 due to lack of sponsorship after scaling back heavily from 1998 onwards. Marco Greco (Born December 1, 1963 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and auto racing driver who competed in the Indy Racing League from 1996 to 1999. His best finish in the season points was third in 1996–1997. He made four starts in the Indianapolis 500 with a best finish of 14th in 1998. 1996 Indy 200 At Walt Disney World
The 1996 Indy 200 at Walt Disney World was the first round of the 1996 Indy Racing League, and the inaugural event for the Indy Racing League, who initiated the American open-wheel split that would last for 12 years. The race was held on January 27, 1996, at the Walt Disney World Speedway in Bay Lake, Florida. The race was won by a rookie driver, Buzz Calkins, after leading 130 laps. Future Indy Racing League and NASCAR champion Tony Stewart also made his Indy car debut, finishing second after a late-race duel with Calkins. Pre-Race News The first event for the breakaway Indy Racing League took place at Walt Disney World Speedway, a brand new venue inaugurated on November 28, 1995. 1996 Indy Racing League Season
The 1996 Indy Racing League was the first season in the history of the series, which was created and announced on March 11, 1994 by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), as a supplementary series to the established Indy Car World Series sanctioned by Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) since 1979. It consisted of only three races, as the season concluded with the 80th Indianapolis 500 in May. Walt Disney World Speedway was completed in time to host the first ever event of the Indy Racing League (IRL), and Phoenix International Raceway switched alliances from CART to the IRL, in order to host the second event of the season. At the conclusion of the three-race schedule, Scott Sharp and Buzz Calkins ended up tied for first place in the season championship. With no tiebreaker rule in place, the two drivers were declared co-champions. Alessandro Zampedri
Alessandro Zampedri (born 3 October 1969) is an Italian Auto racing, race car driver from Brescia. He started three Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis 500s (1995 Indianapolis 500, 1995, 1996 Indianapolis 500, 1996, and 1997 Indianapolis 500, 1997). Racing career Zampedri was seriously injured in the 1996 Indianapolis 500, suffering severe foot and leg injuries on the last lap of the race. While running fourth, Zampedri was collected in a crash with Roberto Guerrero and Eliseo Salazar. Zampedri's car became airborne and crashed into the fence at the head of the main straightaway. The car came to rest near the pit entry. A portion of Zampedri's left foot and three toes had to be amputated as a result of the accident. He returned to Indianapolis in 1997, but he struggled, due to engine failure during the formation laps. Fermín Vélez
Fermín Vélez Bisbe (April 3, 1959 – March 31, 2003) was a Spanish sports car racing driver, two-time winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring and two-time World Sportscar Championship Group C2 champion. Vélez was a driver in the Indy Racing League, racing in the 1996–1997 seasons with six career starts, including two at the Indianapolis 500. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Vélez died there of cancer. Vincenzo Sospiri
Vincenzo Sospiri (born 7 October 1966) is an Italian former racing driver. Early career In 1981, at the age of 15, Sospiri started racing in the Italian 100cc karting championship. In a karting career described by Michael Schumacher as 'dominating', Sospiri won several Italian and European karting championships and finished runner-up in several more, eventually winning the 100cc World Karting Championship in 1987. In 1988 Sospiri progressed to Formula Ford, before working through to Formula 3000 in 1991, as teammate to Damon Hill in the Middlebridge Lola T91/50 Cosworth. In an uncompetitive car, he was only capable of 9 points all season, including a second place at the German round of the championship at the Hockenheimring. Billy Roe
Billy Roe (born May 7, 1957 in Indianapolis, Indiana), is a former driver in the Indy Racing League. He raced in the 1997–1998 and 2000–2002 seasons with 16 career starts, including 2 at the Indianapolis 500. His best IRL finish was a 12th place at Nashville Speedway in 2001. In the 1997 Las Vegas Motor Speedway race, he fielded his own car. Prior to racing in the IRL he competed in Toyota Atlantic from 1991 to 1995, however, he never competed in more than 3 races in a single season. Jimmy Kite
Jimmy Kite (born February 18, 1976, in Effingham, Illinois) is a retired American race car driver. He debuted in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series in 1997 and has competed in 34 IndyCar races, including five Indianapolis 500s. In 2005, he intended to compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and he made four starts before being called to replace the injured Paul Dana for Hemelgarn Racing in the IRL, where he completed the season after the Indy 500. Largely out of racing since the end of the 2005 season, Kite founded JK Hobby World in November 2006.
