The Tavares and Gulf Railroad (T&G) was a historic railroad in Central Florida that operated for many years as a subsidiary of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. It existed from 1886 to 1969. Route Description The Tavares and Gulf Railroad began just southeast of Tavares, Florida, Tavares at Ellsworth Junction. From here, it ran south through Astatula, Florida, Astatula and continued south winding through Ferndale, Florida, Ferndale and Montverde, Florida, Montverde on the west side of Lake Apopka. Florida Central And Peninsular Railroad
The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad was the final name of a system of railroads throughout Florida, becoming part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1900. The system, including some of the first railroads in Florida, stretched from Jacksonville west through Tallahassee and south to Tampa. Much of the FC&P network is still in service under the ownership of CSX Transportation. History The Tallahassee Rail Road was first organized in 1832 as the Leon Railway, changing its name in 1834. It opened in 1837, connecting Tallahassee, Florida to the Gulf of Mexico port of St. Marks, Florida. Tildenville is a census-designated place (CDP) and an unincorporated area in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Generally speaking, Tildenville is a narrow area alongside Orange County Road 545, south of Florida State Road 50 and north of the Stoneybrook West planned unit development. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad's Orlando Subdivision (T Line) was a rail line connecting the Seaboard Air Line's network to Orlando, Florida. Beginning at the Seaboard Air Line's main line in Wildwood, it ran southeast through Leesburg, Florida, Tavares, and Apopka to Orlando. From Orlando, the line continued northeast to Winter Park and Oviedo before coming to an end at Lake Charm. History The Orlando Subdivision was built by predecessors of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. The Leesburg and Indian River Railroad was incorporated in 1884, and they built line from Wildwood east to Tavares, with plans to continue east to Titusville. The Lake Apopka Loop Trail is a trail running along Lake Apopka North Shore, connecting Magnolia Park and the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead. It is managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District. Route The paved trail begins at Magnolia Park and continues along the northern shore of Lake Apopka and through reclaimed wetland to the Green Mountain Scenic Overlook. Four miles from Magnolia Park is a historic pump house, and the hiking trail intersects with the Wildlife Drive. Hikers, cyclists, and cars share the road for just over 1 mile. After another 6.5 miles, the trail meets the North Shore Trailhead. West Orange Trail
The West Orange Trail is a long multi-use rail trail owned by Orange County Parks and Recreation in Orange County, Florida, in the United States. The paved trail passes through downtown Oakland, Winter Garden, and Apopka with most of its length built on old railroad alignments. To the west of the West Orange Trail is the South Lake-Lake Minneola Scenic Trail in Lake County which was connected to the trail in 2007. Stations There are four main stations on the West Orange Trail, each providing parking, restroom facilities, bike racks and drinking fountains. The Florida Central Railroad Company is one of several short line railroads run by Regional Rail, LLC. It runs from downtown Orlando northwest to Apopka and Tavares with a branch from Toronto to Ocoee and Winter Garden and branches from Tavares to Umatilla and Sorrento. The Florida Central connects with the Central Florida Rail Corridor in downtown Orlando, Florida and has trackage rights on the CFRC from there south to Taft Yard where they interchange with CSX Transportation. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. In 1967 it merged with long-time rival Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of the original ACL network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986. The Atlantic Coast Line served the Southeast, with a concentration of lines in Florida. Numerous named passenger trains were operated by the railroad for Florida-bound tourists, with the Atlantic Coast Line contributing significantly to Florida's economic development in the first half of the 20th century.
