Tasman Higgins
Tasman Higgins (8 April 1888 – 4 June 1953) was an Australian cinematographer during the early days of the Australian film industry, working for such directors as Charles Chauvel, Raymond Longford, Beaumont Smith, Louise Lovely and Rupert Kathner. He was the brother of Arthur and Ernest Higgins, with whom he occasionally collaborated. His most notable association was with Charles Chauvel, starting with ''In the Wake of the Bounty'' (1933), which was Errol Flynn's first film and involved three months of location filming on Pitcairn Island. Glebe, Tasmania
Glebe is a suburb of Hobart, capital city of Tasmania, Australia. The suburb is a very small area adjacent to the city on the same part of land as the Queens Domain, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and the Hobart Aquatic Centre. At the 2016 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 554. Glebe is a small suburb in comparison to some in Hobart. On the north and east sides, the suburb is surrounded by the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Brooker Avenue marks the western boundary of the suburb, while the Tasman Highway marks the southern side. The Glebe contains some examples of Victorian and Federation Style wooden terraced houses, some of which are up to 4 storeys high and tower over the Brooker Avenue impressively. Errol Flynn
Errol Leslie Thomson Flynn (20 June 1909 – 14 October 1959) was an Australian-American actor who achieved worldwide fame during the Golden Age of Hollywood. He was known for his romantic swashbuckler roles, frequent partnerships with Olivia de Havilland, and reputation for his womanising and hedonistic personal life. ''Daughter of the East'', also known as 'The Boy of the Dardanelles', is a 1924 Australian silent film directed by Roy Darling. It is considered a lost film. Plot Harry Wharton is born of English parents in Turkey. Despite being engaged to a woman back in England, he falls in love with an orphaned Armenian girl, Marian. A Turkish pasha also loves Marian and kidnaps her. Wharton tries to rescue her but is captured just as England and Turkey declare war on each other. He escapes disguised as a Greek and joins the Australians at the Gallipoli Campaign. After the war Wharton finds Marian who has been traumatised by the war. He helps her recover and his fiancée gives him his freedom, enabling Wharton and Marian to be married. Production The film was financed by Adam Tavlradi, a Greek cafe owner keen to show a film demonstrating the contribution of Greeks to the British war effort. When The Kellys Were Out
''When the Kellys Were Out'' is an Australian feature-length film directed by Harry Southwell about Ned Kelly. Only part of the film survives today. Plot Constable Fitzpatrick arrives at the Kelly house, to accuse Dan Kelly of cattle duffing. He is met by Kate Kelly, Dan's sister, and is taken by her beauty. Mrs Kelly tries to prevent the arrest and Ned arrives. A quarrel ensues in which Fitzpatrick is attacked, and Ned flees. He joins with Steve Hary, Joe Byrne and Dan Kelly and escapes to a hide out. Ned hears that his mother has been arrested and forms a hatred for the police. He and his gang hold up Younghusband Station and just escape the police. Then there are the Wombat murders, from which only one person survives. The gang hold up the bank at Jerilderie and Kate Kelly rides to warn her brothers. The Life Story Of John Lee, Or The Man They Could Not Hang (1921 Film)
''The Life Story of John Lee, or the Man They Could Not Hang'' is a 1921 Australian silent film based on the true life story of John Babbacombe Lee. It is a remake of a 1912 film with some extra scenes of Lee's childhood. Unlike many silent Australian films, a copy of the movie exists. Plot John Lee grows up in England and is falsely accused of the murder of Emma Keye at Babbacombe. Characters include his parents; Miss Key's employer, Ned Saw; Eliza Harris and Jane, servants of Miss Keye; Kate Farmer, Lee's sweetheart. He is sentenced to be executed but the executions fail three times. Eventually, Lee is set free and is reunited with his mother and sweetheart at home. Production Sterry and Haldane enjoyed enormous success with the 1912 version of this story, so they decided to remake it. Plot Money-hungry Gilbert Hordern is married to an adoring wife and has a child. He pretends to be his own evil twin brother so he can marry a millionaire's daughter. He succeeds but is wracked with guilt and confesses. He wakes up and realises it was all a dream. ''The Silence of Dean Maitland'' is a 1914 Australian silent film directed by Raymond Longford. It is an adaptation of the 1886 novel of the same name by Maxwell Gray which was later filmed by Ken G. Hall in 1934. It is considered a lost film. Plot The Reverend Dean Maitland (Harry Thomas) falls for Alma Lee (Nellie Brooks) and impregnates her, despite being engaged to another woman. Alma's father attacks Maitland and Maitland accidentally kills him in the struggle. His best friend, Dr Henry Everard (Arthur Shirley) is convicted of the crime and sentenced to twenty years in gaol. When Everard is released he comes to Maitland's church. The Dean confesses his guilt publicly and collapses and dies. ''Australia Calls'' is a 1913 Australian silent film directed by Raymond Longford about the fictitious invasion of Australia by an unnamed Asian country. The movie is not to be confused with Longford's 1923 picture '' Australia Calls'' and is considered a lost film. Longford later claimed the film was the first Australian movie to have mass extras (from Sydney's Chinatown) and feature model photography, as well as being the first film in the world to show wireless communication. Film historians have said "the scale and blatant propaganda of he film.. made it the least typical of Longford's thirty narrative films". ''The Tide of Death'' is a 1912 Australian silent film directed by Raymond Longford based on an original story by Longford. This was rare at the time because most Australian silent films were based on plays or novels. It is considered a lost film. Synopsis The film is set in Australia's past. It opens with a young mining contractor, Philip Maxwell, blowing up a rock at a mining site. He then rides on horseback to the bank to get wages for his crew. "The Lizard", a camp loafer, learns about this and informs Black Dan Bryce, who decides to rob Philip with his gang. This is overheard by Dan's step daughter Sylvia, who rides for help. The saddle bag containing the money is secured by one of Dan's gang, who is overpowered by Philip. He manages to conceal the money just before he is captured by Dan and refuses to say where it is. Forty Thousand Horsemen
''Forty Thousand Horsemen'' (aka ''40,000 Horsemen'') is a 1940 Australian war film directed by Charles Chauvel. The film tells the story of the Australian Light Horse (mounted rifleman as distinct from cavalry) which operated in the desert at the Sinai and Palestine campaign during World War I. It follows the adventures of three rowdy heroes in fighting and romance. The film culminates at the Battle of Beersheba which is reputedly "the last successful cavalry charge in history". The film was clearly a propaganda weapon, to aid in recruitment and lift the pride of Australians at home during World War II.
