Tantramar, New Brunswick
Tantramar is a town in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. It was formed through the 2023 New Brunswick local governance reforms. History Tantramar was incorporated on January 1, 2023 via the amalgamation of the former town of Sackville and the former village of Dorchester as well as the concurrent annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas. The name ''Tantramar'' is derived from the Acadian French ''tintamarre'', meaning 'din' or 'racket', a reference to the noisy flocks of birds which feed there in the marshes. Geography Tantramar is on the Isthmus of Chignecto, which connects the Nova Scotia peninsula with North America. It is on the Tantramar River, which empties into Chignecto Bay, a sub-basin of the Bay of Fundy. Tantramar is at a low elevation above sea level. Prominent ridges rise above the marshes, namely the Fort Lawrence Ridge, the Aulac Ridge, the Sackville Ridge, and the Memramcook Ridge. Tantramar Marshes
The Tantramar Marshes, also known as the Tintamarre National Wildlife Area, is a tidal saltmarsh around the Bay of Fundy on the Isthmus of Chignecto. The area borders between New Brunswick Route 940, Route 940, New Brunswick Route 16, Route 16 and New Brunswick Route 2, Route 2 near Sackville, New Brunswick. The government of Canada proposed the boundaries of the Tantramar Marshes in 1966 and was declared a National Wildlife Area in 1978. The marshes are an important stopover for Bird migration, migrating waterfowl such as Semipalmated sandpiper, semipalmated sandpipers and Canada geese. Now a National Wildlife Area, the marshes are the site of two Bird sanctuary, bird sanctuaries. Tantramar (electoral District)
Tantramar is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It was created in the 1973 electoral redistribution and first used in the 1974 election as Tantramar. It went largely unchanged in both the 1994 redistribution and 2006 redistribution, even though it was well below the allowable population variance in the latter. In 2006, the electoral boundaries commission ruled that the district was an exceptional case, as it was surrounded by water and the province of Nova Scotia to the south and west, and to predominantly francophone areas to the north and east that would become significant minorities were they added to the district. The 2013 boundaries commission refused to persist the exception and added the francophone village of Memramcook from the former riding of Memramcook-Lakeville-Dieppe to the district, giving the riding the new name of Memramcook-Tantramar. Tantramar Civic Centre
Sackville is a former town in southeastern New Brunswick, Canada. It held town status prior to 2023 and is now part of the town of Tantramar. Sackville is home to Mount Allison University, a primarily undergraduate liberal arts university. The university welcomes roughly 2200 students per academic year. Historically based on agriculture, shipbuilding, and manufacturing, the economy is now driven by the university and tourism. Initially part of the French colony of Acadia, the settlement became part of the British colony of Nova Scotia in 1755 following the Expulsion of the Acadians. Tantramar Heritage Trust
The Tantramar Heritage Trust is a non-profit charity that promotes the preservation of heritage buildings, artefacts and lands in an area of south-east New Brunswick along the Nova Scotia border known as the "Tantramar". This region, which is centred on Sackville, New Brunswick and Amherst, Nova Scotia is characterised by an ecologically significant coastal lowland known as the Tantramar Marshes, which encompasses the Tintamarre National Wildlife Area. The trust publishes a number of pamphlets and books related to the history of the area and also operates two museums: the Campbell Carriage Factory in Middle Sackville and the Boultenhouse Heritage Centre in Sackville.
