Eagletail Mountains Wilderness
The Eagletail Mountains Wilderness is part of the Eagletail Mountains of central-west Arizona, about 65 mi west of Phoenix. The wilderness is of moderate size, with the Eagletail Mountains forming its northeast perimeter, and the much shorter Cemetery Ridge section, forming its southwest border. The wilderness covers nearly all of the Eagletail Mountains and the plains on its southwest. The wilderness lies at the southeast of the Ranegras Plain, the headwater region of Bouse Wash, and lies adjacent to the northwest border of the extensive Gila Bend Mountains, the mountain range causing the great Gila Bend excursion of the Gila River, in Arizona. Dateland is a CDP, populated place, and colonia in Yuma County, Arizona, United States. It is in an area well known for date palm dates. Dateland has the ZIP Code of 85333; in 2000, the population of the 85333 ZCTA was 852. The community is part of the Yuma Metropolitan Statistical Area. Demographics History Dateland began as a road stop in the 1920s. During World War II, Dateland was the site of two of General Patton's desert training camps, Camp Horn and Camp Hyder. In addition, in 1942, three airstrips were built in Dateland for training B25 Bombers, including the Dateland Air Force Auxiliary Field. Castle Dome Mountains
The Castle Dome Mountains (Tolkepaya Yavapai language, Yavapai: Wi:hopuʼ) are a mountain range in Yuma County, Arizona, within the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. Castle Dome (butte), Castle Dome Peak, the high point of the range, is a prominent butte and distinctive landmark. The peak is high, and is located at 33°05′04″N 114°08′36″W. Castle Dome was named by American soldiers at old Fort Yuma in the 1880s. Early Spanish explorers called the same peak ''Cabeza de Gigante'', "Giant's Head." History Mining The Castle Dome mining district is one of Yuma County's oldest and most productive mining locations. Yavapai Language
Yavapai is an Upland Yuman language, spoken by Yavapai people in central and western Arizona. There are four dialects: Kwevkepaya, Wipukpaya, Tolkepaya, and Yavepe. Linguistic studies of the Kwevkepaya (Southern), Tolkepaya (Western), Wipukepa (Verde Valley), and Yavepe (Prescott) dialects have been published (Mithun 1999:578). Geographic distribution Yavapai was once spoken across much of north-central and western Arizona, but is now mostly spoken on the Yavapai reservations at Fort McDowell, the Verde Valley and Prescott.
