Marmion Tower, also known historically as Tanfield Castle, is a 15th-century gatehouse near the village of West Tanfield in North Yorkshire, England. It survived the destruction of the surrounding fortified manor and is now managed by English Heritage. History Marmion Tower is a stone gatehouse, built in the early 15th century as the entrance to the fortified manor of West Tanfield. West Tanfield occupied a strategic crossing point on the north bank of the River Ure, and John Marmion, 3rd Baron Marmion of Winteringham, Sir John Marmion and later his daughter-in-law Maud were given licences by the Crown to Crenelation, crenellate the manor house there in 1314 and 1348 respectively. West Tanfield
West Tanfield is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately six miles north of Ripon on the A6108 road, A6108, which goes from Ripon to Masham and Wensleydale. The parish includes the hamlets of Nosterfield, Thornborough, North Yorkshire, Thornborough and Binsoe. History The toponym is from the Old English ''tāna feld'', meaning "open land where young shoots grow", or possibly "open land of a man called Tana". The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as ''Tanefeld''. The manor was owned by ''Thorkil'' at the time of the Norman invasion, but were afterwards granted to Count Alan of Brittany. The manor was held by ''Hugh, son of Gernegan'' thereafter and his heirs until at least 1243. One of these heirs, a woman named ''Avis'' had married Robert Marmion (died 1242), Robert Marmion and held the manor in 1287.
