Tallinna Kalev (1920–2005)
Kalev (also known as Tallinn Kalev, Korvpalliklubi Kalev) was a professional basketball club from Tallinn, Estonia. The team played in the Estonian Basketball League and in the Soviet Union Basketball League. Their home arena was Kalev Sports Hall. Kalev was a professional basketball team representing Estonia in Soviet Union Basketball League until 1992; thereafter Kalev was designed like a national team with the best 12 players from all over Estonia. History Kalev was founded in 1920 with the eponymous sports Estonian society. Kalev became winner of the second to last championship of the USSR Premier Basketball League in 1991 and in 1991–92 season the team became runner-up of the open Commonwealth of Independent States league. USSR Premier Basketball League
The USSR Premier Basketball League, or Soviet Union Premier Basketball League (also called Supreme League), was the first-tier men's professional basketball league in the former Soviet Union. The league existed from 1923 to 1991, as the top professional basketball league of the Soviet Union, and from 1991 to 1992, as the top professional basketball league of the CIS. In the years 1924, 1928, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1956, 1959, 1963, and 1967, the league was contested by city teams, regional teams, and state national teams, rather than individual sports clubs. CSKA Moscow was the league's most successful club, having won the league's championship 24 times, including winning 9 consecutive championships, from 1976 to 1984. Gert Kullamäe
Gert Kullamäe (born 3 June 1971) is an Estonian basketball coach and a former professional basketball player who currently coaches the Estonian team BC Pärnu Sadam. Kullamäe mostly played at the shooting guard position and was a great 3-point shooter. As a player he is a seven-time Estonian Champion and also a Soviet Union, Lithuanian, Belgian and Dutch champion. Club career Kullamäe was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and made his senior club debut with the TPI (Tallinn University of Technology) team in the Estonian SSR Championship (today Korvpalli Meistriliiga). This happened in the autumn of 1985 when he was only 14 years and 4 months old. Valmo Kriisa
Valmo Kriisa (born 18 May 1974) is an Estonian former professional basketball player. Career Kriisa played at the point guard and shooting guard positions. Kriisa started his senior club career with "KK Tartu" team ( Tartu Ülikool/Rock) in 1990 and after 96–97 season he moved to "Nybit". He spent the 2000–01 season in Sweden with Södertälje BBK. Kriisa then returned to Estonia, signed for two seasons with "BC Kalev" and won the Estonian Championship titles in 2002 and 2003. On seasons 2003–2006 he played for the Dutch Eredivisie team Hanzevast Capitals. During this period he won the Dutch Championship in 2004. Aivar Kuusmaa
Aivar Kuusmaa (born 12 June 1967) is an Estonian basketball coach and former professional basketball player who played mostly at the shooting guard position. He won the USSR Premier Basketball League in 1991 as a member of the KK Kalev, Tallinn Kalev basketball team. Kuusmaa mostly played in Estonia, but he also spent three seasons in Greece, with Panathinaikos BC, Panathinaikos and one season in Belgium, with Liege Basket. Also, during the service in the Red Army, Soviet Army, Kuusmaa was stationed in Latvian SSR and played in the local army sports club Rīgas ASK. After retiring in 2005 he has been coaching BC Kalev/Cramo (2005–2007 & 2010–2012), TTÜ KK (2007–2010) and Rapla KK, AVIS Utilitas Rapla (2014–2018). Joann Lõssov
Joann Lõssov (10 September 1921 – 3 August 2000), also known as Ioann Fyodorovich Lysov (), was an Estonian basketball player. Lõssov trained at VSS Kalev, in Tallinn. He was named MVP of the 1947 EuroBasket. Member of the Soviet Union basketball team in 1947–52, from 1949, the captain and points guard. After his career as a player, worked as the head coach of the Soviet Union women’s team in 1953–58 (gold medals from the European Championships of 1954 and 1956) and helped to organise special trainings of the Soviet Union team. Aleksei Tammiste (born July 29, 1946) is a retired Estonian professional basketball player, who competed for the Soviet Union. He won a gold medal at the 1971 EuroBasket Championship held in West Germany. During his career Tammiste won 10 Estonian league titles, the most domestic titles won by and Estonian basketball player. Jaak Lipso
Jaak Lipso (18 April 1940 – 3 March 2023) was an Estonian professional basketball player who competed for the Soviet Union. He is the only Estonian basketball player who has won two medals at the Olympic Games. Lipso also won two medals at the FIBA World Championship and was a three-time Eurobasket champion with the Soviet Union national basketball team. He was a member of the Soviet Union national team from 1961 to 1970. After his active career Lipso became a basketball coach, and was elected to the Estonian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Lipso died on 3 March 2023, at age 82. Club career Lipso's career started at the age of 16 when he joined TRÜ basketball team (now Tartu Ülikool/Rock) in 1956. Heino Enden
Heino Enden (born 13 December 1959 in Tallinn) is a retired Estonian professional basketball player who played mostly at the shooting guard position. Basketball career His most notable achievements include winning the World Championship as a member of the Soviet Union team in the 1982 in Bogota, Colombia and the gold, silver and bronze medals with the same team in the 1983, 1985 and 1987 EuroBasket competitions. He won the Soviet Union League championship twice as a member of the CSKA Moscow basketball team and ended his professional career as a player in 1996, after playing a season with the Tampereen Pyrintö in Finland. After retiring his playing career, he coached various teams in Estonia, including Estonia national basketball team between 2001 and 2004. Jaak Salumets
Jaak Salumets (born 30 January 1949 in Paide) is a retired Estonian professional basketball player and coach who played mostly at the forward position. Salumets is also a former Estonian Reform Party politician who was a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament) from 2007 to 2011. Early life and career Jaak Salumets was born in Paide and started his basketball career in his hometown. Soon he was discovered by basketball coaches in TPI (present day TTÜ) and made his way through to the Soviet youth team and Tallinn Kalev. The USSR Basketball Cup, or Soviet Union Basketball Cup, was the national basketball cup competition of the former Soviet Union. The first USSR Cup was held in the year 1949, and the last one was held in the year 1987. The competition was not held every year, as it was only contested 11 times between the years 1949 and 1987. Tallinna Kalev is a basketball team based in Tallinn, Estonia. The team was founded in 2002 as Pirita Palliklubi and played in the Korvpalli Meistriliiga (KML) from 2002 to 2024. History The team was founded in 2002 as Pirita Palliklubi (Pirita Ball Club), the same year they joined the Korvpalli Meistriliiga (KML), the top tier of Estonian basketball. In their first season, they reached the Estonian Cup final, but lost 76–92 to TÜ/Rock. Prior to the 2008–09 season, BC Pirita joined the Tallinn Sports Association Kalev and changed their name to Tallinna Kalev. In July 2010, Tallinna Kalev merged operations with TTÜ Korvpalliklubi.
