Tallinn Trams Named After Musicians
Twelve of Tallinn's tram fleet are named after influential figures in Estonian music. The namings were announced and took place between September 2018 and July 2019. Tallin's transport company, Tallinna Linnatranspordi AS, decided to rename twelve of Tallinn's newly-refurbished KT-6 tram units at a cost of 10.8 million euros. As they believed music had brought Estonia more fame than other industries and exports, they decided to name them after musicians. Each tram has the musician's first name (or the band's full name) on the side of the first car, and an information poster both inside and outside the tram with some brief information for the public to read. Tallinn is the capital city, capital and List of cities in Estonia, most populous city of Estonia. Alo Mattiisen
Alo Mattiisen (22 April 1961 – 30 May 1996) was an Estonian musician and composer. One of the most famous melodies that he composed was a patriotic song titled "No land is alone", with lyrics written by the Estonian poet Jüri Leesment. Several other of his patriotic compositions became staples for the Singing Revolution including the ‘Five Patriotic Songs’ series. Early life and education Alo Mattiisen was born in the town of Jõgeva. His father was Evald Mattiesen. In 1984, Mattiisen graduated from the Tallinn State Conservatory, becoming a specialist in pedagogy of music. In 1988, he graduated from the same school, becoming a specialist in composition. Creative period In 1983, Mattiisen replaced Erkki-Sven Tüür in In Spe. Tüür was leaving the ensemble and seeking a replacement. The first performance of Mattiisen with In Spe was in January 1984. The Estonian Academy of Arts (Estonian language, Estonian: ''Eesti Kunstiakadeemia'', EKA) is the only public university in Estonia providing higher education in art, design, architecture, Media (communication), media, art history and conservation-restoration. Gustav Ernesaks
Gustav Ernesaks (12 December 1908 – 24 January 1993) was an Estonian composer and a choir conducting, conductor. Biography Gustav Ernesaks was born on 12 December 1908 in Perila, Estonia. He was educated at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre where he was a pupil of Juhan Aavik and Artur Kapp. After completing his education, he founded the first professional choir in the history of Estonia in 1944, the State Academic Men's Choir (now the Estonian National Male Choir). Ernesaks played an integral role in the Singing Revolution and was one of the father figures of the Estonian Song Festival tradition. One of his songs, a setting of Lydia Koidula's poem ''Mu isamaa on minu arm'', became an unofficial national anthem during the years of Estonian SSR. His performance of the song at the XVII Estonian Song Festival was one of the inspirations for Dmitri Shostakovich's 1970 a capella choral cycle, ''Loyalty (Shostakovich), Loyalty''. Ellerhein is an Estonian girl's choir. History Ellerhein's predecessor was the Tallinn Children's Choir, which was founded in 1951 by . In 1969, the choir was renamed Ellerhein.
