Tallebudgera Post Office
Tallebudgera Post Office is a heritage-listed former post office at 17 Trees Road, Tallebudgera, Queensland, Tallebudgera, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 1 October 2007. History The former Tallebudgera Post Office was officially opened in 1878 and was in operation until March 1958. It was a privately owned and built building. Tallebudgera was located along the main stock route between Queensland and New South Wales and was a stopover point for the Cobb and Co. Coaches. In 2002, the deteriorating property was purchased and restored by the City of Gold Coast, Gold Coast City Council (GCCC). The GCCC now maintains the site as a museum piece for educational and historical purposes. Geography Tallebudgera Creek forms a part of the western and eastern border of Tallebudgera. History The traditional owners were the Tulgigin clan of Australian Aboriginals, but in the 2011 Census, Indigenous Australians accounted for just 0.9% of the population of Tallebudgera (around one third of the national average of 2.5%). The village was originally called Maybree, perhaps after the name of a tree that grew locally, while ''Tallebudgera'' was the name of the creek and was an Aboriginal word meaning ''good fish''. Another theory is that the name refers to a property called "Mayberry" owned by pioneers Stephen Tobin and his wife Mary. Tobin was known for his hospitality and it is possible that Mayberry was shortened to Maybree and became well known as a place to stay when travelling through or to Tallebudgera. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. Cobb And Co
Cobb & Co was the name used by several independent Australian coach businesses. The first company to use 'Cobb & Co' was established in 1853 by American Freeman Cobb and his partners. The name grew to great prominence in the late 19th century, when it was carried by many stagecoaches carrying passengers and mail to various Australian goldfields, and later to regional and remote areas of the Australian outback. The same name was used in New Zealand and Freeman Cobb used it in South Africa. Although the Queensland branch of the company made an effort to transition to automobiles in the early 20th century, high overhead costs and the growth of alternative transport options for mail, including rail and air, saw the final demise of Cobb & Co.
