Tallahassee Capitals
The Tallahassee Capitals were a Minor League Baseball team, based in Tallahassee, Florida, United States, that operated between 1935 and 1942. Playing as members of the Georgia–Florida League (1935–1942, 1946–1950) and Alabama–Florida League (1951), Tallahassee teams won league championships in 1935, 1936 and 1950. History The team originated in the Georgia–Florida League as the Capitals. They had affiliation deals with the New York Giants (NL), New York Giants (1935–1936), Brooklyn Dodgers (1938) and Cleveland Indians (1939). The onset of World War II led to the team temporarily shutting down in 1942. When the war ended, they reformed as an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1946, now known as the Tallahassee Pirates. When that agreement ended, they joined the Alabama–Florida League for one last season, in 1951, as the Tallahassee Citizens. The ballpark The Capitals played at Centennial Field. Minor League Baseball (MiLB) is a professional baseball organization below Major League Baseball (MLB), constituted of teams affiliated with MLB clubs. It was founded on September 5, 1901, in response to the growing dominance of the National League (baseball), National League and American League, as the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (NAPBL or NA). Minor League Baseball originated as simply the organization of lower tiers of professional baseball in the United States, comprising clubs that lacked the financial means to compete with the National League and later the American League. The association of minor leagues remained independent throughout the early 20th century, protected by agreements with the major leagues to ensure they were compensated when minor-league players were signed by major-league clubs.
