Koillismaa
Koillismaa () is a subdivision of Northern Ostrobothnia and one of the sub-regions of Finland since 2009. Municipalities Geographic region Koillismaa is also a geographic region, which includes Kuusamo, Taivalkoski, Posio and Pudasjärvi, sometimes also Ranua and Ylikiiminki (which was merged into Oulu in 2009). The name was first used by Reino Rinne, the founder of the newspaper ''Koillissanomat'' in 1950, however the name was popularized by Kalle Päätalo in the 1960s. Dialects The dialects of Kuusamo, Taivalkoski and Posio are Savonian dialects, specifically Kainuu dialects. Parts of Pudasjärvi also use a Kainuu dialect. Kaarlo (Kalle) Alvar Päätalo (11 November 1919 – 20 November 2000) was a Finnish novelist, the most popular Finnish writer in the 20th century. Tuulikki Ukkola
Lahja Tuulikki Ukkola (; 28 November 1943 – 28 May 2019) was a Finnish politician and journalist. Born in Taivalkoski, she began working for the newspaper '' Kaleva'' in 1962. As a member of the Liberal People's Party, she served as an MP for the Oulu constituency from 1991 to 1995. She was also the leader of the party between 1993 and 1995. Following the 2007 national parliamentary election, Ukkola was again elected as an MP for Oulu, this time for the National Coalition Party, serving until 2011.
