Tablelands Region
The Tablelands Region is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia inland from the city of Cairns. Established in 2008, it was preceded by four previous local government areas which dated back more than a century. On 1 January 2014, one of those local government areas, the Shire of Mareeba, was re-established independent of the Tablelands Region. It has an estimated operating budget of A$62.2 million. Australian Aboriginal Languages
The Indigenous languages of Australia number in the hundreds, the precise number being quite uncertain, although there is a range of estimates from a minimum of around 250 (using the technical definition of 'language' as non-mutually intelligible varieties) up to possibly 363. The Indigenous languages of Australia comprise numerous language families and isolates, perhaps as many as 13, spoken by the Indigenous peoples of mainland Australia and a few nearby islands. The relationships between the language families are not clear at present although there are proposals to link some into larger groupings. Shire Of Barron
The Shire of Barron is a former local government area in Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia. It existed between 1890 and 1919. History Under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'', the Cairns Division, Hinchinbrook Division and Woothakata Division were created on 11 November 1879. On 3 September 1881, parts of each of these three divisions were excised to create the new Tinaroo Division. In 1889, residents of the No. 3 subdivision of Tinnaroo Division began to agitate for an independent division. On 20 December 1890, part of the Tinaroo Division was excised to create the new Barron Division. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', the Barron Division became the Shire of Barron on 31 March 1903. On 20 December 1919, the Shire of Barron was abolished and was split between the Shires of Cairns and Woothakata. Irvinebank is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Irvinebank had a population of 125 people. Geography The Great Dividing Range forms the south-eastern and southern boundary of the locality. Irvinebank is in the western foothills of the Atherton Tablelands of Far North Queensland, south-west of Cairns via the Bruce Highway, Gillies Range Road, State Route 25 (bypassing Atherton) and the Herberton Petford Road. Herberton is a rural town and locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Herberton had a population of 855 people. Geography Herberton is on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland. It is situated high on the Great Dividing Range south-west of Atherton. Vegetation ranges from tropical rainforest to the east, wet sclerophyll forests to the north and east and open sclerophyll forests and woodlands to the north and west. History The first European exploration of this area, part of the traditional land of the Dyirbal, was undertaken in 1875 by James Venture Mulligan. Mulligan was prospecting for gold, but instead found tin. The town of Herberton was established on 19 April 1880 by John Newell to exploit the tin find, and mining began on 9 May 1880. Thornborough, Queensland
Thornborough is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Thornborough had a population of 9 people. It rose to prominence in the 1870s as a gold mining town in the Hodgkinson Minerals Area. Today, there are very few buildings remaining in the town. Geography The town of Kingsborough, another former mining town, is located to the north-east of the town of Thornborough. History Thornborough was named in 1876 after George Henry Thorn, the then Queensland Premier. By May 1877, the streets were laid out and named after pioneers of north Queensland, such as James Venture Mulligan and William (Billy) McLeod and Muirson. Thornborough Provisional School opened circa 1878. In 1909 it became Thornborough State School. Tinaroo, Queensland
Tinaroo is a rural locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Tinaroo had a population of 312 people. The town of Tinaroo Falls is on the eastern edge of the locality () beside Lake Tinaroo. Geography Tinaroo is located on the shore of Lake Tinaroo, a man-made reservoir. The Shire of Herberton was a local government area of Queensland. It was located on the Atherton Tableland, a plateau forming part of the Great Dividing Range west of the city of Cairns. The shire, administered from the town of Herberton, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1895 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other councils in the Tableland area to become the Tablelands Region. The Shire of Eacham was a local government area of Queensland. It was located on the Atherton Tableland, a plateau forming part of the Great Dividing Range west of the city of Cairns. The shire, administered from the town of Malanda, covered an area of , and existed as a local government entity from 1910 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other councils in the Tableland area to become the Tablelands Region. Despite its tropical latitude, the high altitude on the tableland allows a dairy industry to operate. Kairi is a rural town and locality in the Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Kairi had a population of 442 people. Geography Kairi is on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland. It is close to Lake Tinaroo and the closest more populous place is Tinaroo, which is North of Kairi. Atherton Tableland
The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. The principal river flowing across the plateau is the Barron River (Australia), Barron River. It was dammed to form an irrigation reservoir named Lake Tinaroo.
