Tabernaemontana
''Tabernaemontana'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae. It has a pan-tropical distribution, found in Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America, and islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. These plants are evergreen shrubs and small trees growing to 1–15 m tall. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, 3–25 cm long, with milky sap; hence it is one of the diverse plant genera commonly called "milkwood". The flowers are fragrant, white, 1–5 cm in diameter. The cultivar ''Tabernaemontana divaricata, T. divaricata'' cv. 'Plena', with doubled-petaled flowers, is a popular houseplant. ''Tabernaemontana divaricata'', commonly called pinwheel flower, crape jasmine, East India rosebay, and Nero's crown, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to South Asia, Southeast Asia and China. In zones where it is not hardy it is grown as a house/glasshouse plant for its attractive flowers and foliage. ''Tabernaemontana sananho'' is a tropical tree species in the family Apocynaceae known as lobo sanango. Lobo sanango grows in the Amazon Basin of northern South America. Chemical composition The plant is reported to contain coronaridine, 3-hydroxycoronaridine, (-)-heyneanine, (-)-ibogamine and voacangine. Traditional use In Amazonian traditional medicine, preparations of the leaves, pulp, bark, and latex are either applied topically or taken internally to treat various conditions. Extracts from the tree are antiinflammatory and effective against the protozoan ''Leishmania''. In Peru, this tree is sometimes known by the Spanish–Quechua name lobo sanango ("wolf plant") or simply as sanango. Throughout the Amazon the species has numerous other aliases in several languages. Coronaridine, also known as 18-carbomethoxyibogamine, is an alkaloid found in '' Tabernanthe iboga'' and related species, including '' Tabernaemontana divaricata'' for which (under the now obsolete synonym ''Ervatamia coronaria'') it was named. ''Tabernaemontana undulata'', the becchete or bëcchëte (pronounced b'-chéw-teh, a Matis and Matsés word for a medicinal plant) is a plant species in the family Apocynaceae. It occurs in the Amazon rainforest. Effects Preparation of the medicine begins with a shaman scraping off the outer layers of root bark of the Samá becchete into a leaf. The shaman recites calls to specific animal spirits, such as the squirrel monkey, hummingbird and deer. The shavings are placed inside kapok cotton, combined with water, and wrapped into a leaf that functions as an eye-dropper. When applied directly to the eye, becchete is reported by tribes to have the effect of giving the environment greater texture and dimension, making it easier to spot animals during hunting.
