Tabennesi
Tabenna is a Christian community founded in Upper Egypt around 320 by Saint Pachomius. It was the motherhouse of a federation of monasteries known as the ''Koinonia''. At the time of Pachomius's death in 346, there were nine establishments for men and two for women, along with two or three thousand "Tabennesites". It is considered the first major model of cenobitic monasticism in early Christianity. Name and location Tabenna (also Tabennae, Tabennisi, Tabennesi, Tabennese) is a Coptic name. The name and location of this monastery have long been the subject of great uncertainty. In the various manuscripts of the Lausiac History of Palladios (§ 32), the following Greek forms are found: Ταβέννησις, Ταβέννησος, Ταβενίσιος and Ταβένη. Pachomian Monasteries
The Pachomian monasteries or the ''Koinonia'' of Upper Egypt were a group of Christian cenobitic monasteries founded by Pachomius the Great during the 4th century A.D. Altogether, by the mid-300s A.D., nine Pachomian monasteries formed a network or federation of monasteries known as the ''Koinonia''. All of the nine historical Pachomian monasteries are now defunct. Pbow
Pbow was a cenobitic monastery established by St. Pachomius in 336-337 AD. Pbow is about north of Luxor in modern Upper Egypt. It was one of the nine Pachomian monasteries. Name Pbow is a Coptic name. The Arabic "Faw" in "Faw al-Qibli" ("South Faw") derives from the Coptic Pbow. Other spellings include "Bau", "Pboou", and "Phbow". History Pbow was founded as an administrative center for Pachomius's monastery in 336–337. Although not much is known about the traditions of these monks, we do know that they would annually meet two times a year at Pbow. Catechumens would often be baptized at this monastery on Easter. Theodorus Of Tabennese
Theodorus of Tabennese (c. 314 – 368), also known as Abba Theodorus and Theodore the Sanctified, was the spiritual successor to Pachomius and played a crucial role in preventing the first Christian cenobitic monastic federation from collapsing after the death of its founder. Biography According to hagiography, Theodorus was born into a wealthy Christian family and was well educated from a young age. Early in life he denied the excesses of his parents, and at the age of fourteen joined a monastery in the diocese of Sne, near the modern town of Esna, Egypt. A brother from Theodorus’ monastery stayed with Pachomius in Tabennese while traveling and preached of the virtues of the Koinonia upon his return to Sne. Orsisius
Orsisius (in Greek Arsisios, local name Oresiesis-Heru-sa Ast) was an Egyptian monk and author of the fourth century. His memorial is June 15. Biography Orsisius was a disciple of Pachomius on the Island Tabenna in the Nile. When Pacomius died (348), Orsisius was chosen as his successor; but he resigned in favour of Theodore. It was not till Theodore's death (c. 380) that Orsisius, advised by St. Athanasius, accepted the abbatial office of hegumen. Petronius Of Egypt
Petronius, also spelled Petronios (died 346 AD), was a 4th-century Egyptian Christian monk who served as a superior of the Pachomian monasteries. Life Petronius was born into a wealthy family in Pjoj, a town located in the diocese of Diospolis Parva (also known as Hu or Hiw). He built the monastery of Tbew by converting his family estate into a monastery. Soon afterwards, his father, Pshenthbo, and his brother, Pshenapalhi, and other relatives converted to Christianity and joined the local Pachomian monasteries as monks. He later requested Pachomius to allow Tbew to join the ''Koinonia'', which was Pachomius's federation of monasteries.
