Tabataba (film)

Synopsis Tabataba tells the story of a small Malagasy village during the independence uprising which took place in 1947 in the south of the country. For several months, part of the Malagasy population revolted against the French colonial army in a bloody struggle. The repression in villages that followed was terrible, leading to fires, arrests and torture. Women, children and the elderly were the indirect victims of the conflict and suffered particularly from famine and illness. One leader of the MDRM, the party campaigning for independence, arrives in a village. Raymond Rajaonarivelo
Raymond Rajaonarivelo (born 1949) is a Cinema of Madagascar, Malagasy film director. Life Raymond Rajaonarivelo was born in Antananarivo in 1949. He studied filmmaking at the University of Montpellier and at the University of Paris. Though living on the outskirts of Paris, he returns to Madagascar for filming. In the 1970s Rajaonarivelo made two Malagasy short films. His debut feature film, ''Tabataba (film), Tabataba'' (1988), told the story of a village in the 1947 Malagasy Uprising. It was the first Malagasy film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the 1988 Audience Award. It also won the Jury award at the 1989 Taormina Film Fest, and first feature award at the 1989 Carthage Film Festival. The Malagasy Uprising (french: Insurrection malgache; mg, Tolom-bahoaka tamin' ny 1947) was a Malagasy nationalist rebellion against French colonial rule in Madagascar, lasting from March 1947 to February 1949. Starting in late 1945, Madagascar's first French National Assembly deputies, , and Jacques Rabemananjara of the '' Mouvement démocratique de la rénovation malgache'' (MDRM) political party, led an effort to achieve independence for Madagascar through legal channels. The Carthage Film Festival (CFF) is an annual film festival that takes place in Tunis and founded in 1966.
