Taavet Rootsmäe (until 1936 David Rootsman; 27 June 1885 Tartu County – 27 June 1959 Tartu) was an Estonian astronomer. In 1913 he graduated from Tartu University. Since 1919 he taught at Tartu University (was a professor). From 1919 to 1948 he was the first head of University of Tartu Old Observatory. His main fields of research were stellar astronomy, theoretical astronomy, and celestial mechanics Celestial mechanics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the motions of objects in outer space. University of Tartu Old Observatory or Tartu Old Observatory () is an observatory in Tartu, Estonia. Tartu Observatory was an active observatory from 1810 to 1964. The building now serves as a museum and belongs to the University of Tartu Museum. History Construction of the observatory started in 1808. While it was completed in 1810, setting up the necessary instruments took a few years more. The last of them was the Fraunhofer ''Great Dorpat Refractor'', that was the largest refracting telescope at the time and was constructed in 1824. It has been titled as "the first modern, achromatic, refracting telescope". Celestial mechanics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the motions of objects in outer space. Historically, celestial mechanics applies principles of physics (classical mechanics) to astronomical objects, such as stars and planets, to produce ephemeris data.
