TPLF Internal Leadership Dispute
In August 2024, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) internal administration was disputed between the chief administrator of the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray (IRAT) Getachew Reda and the chairman of TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael after the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) refused to accept the legal status of TPLF as a political party in Ethiopia. On 13 August 2024, the controversial 14th Congress of TPLF was held in Tigray's capital city Mekelle, drawing criticism from the public and NEBE for its irregularity and absence of TPLF officials in the conference. Getachew criticized the meeting for its informality and alleged the meeting designated to "oust certain leaders", and the minister of the Government Communication Service Legesse Tulu stated that holding the Congress "threatens the fragile peace that the people of Tigray have managed to achieve". Getachew Reda
Getachew Reda Kahsay ( Tigrinya and Amharic: ጌታቸው ረዳ ካሕሳይ; born June 1974) is an Ethiopian politician who is serving as the Minister Advisor for East African Affairs. Before this role, he served as the Chief Administrator of the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray, following his appointment by the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia on 23 March 2023. Before assuming power as chief administrator, he was a longtime advisor to the former president of the Tigray Region, Debretsion Gebremichael. Getachew was also an executive committee member and the spokesperson for the Tigray People's Liberation Front. Getachew was the Minister of Government Communications Affairs in Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn's federal government of Ethiopia until 2016. Ethiopia–Tigray Peace Agreement
The Ethiopia–Tigray peace agreement, also called the Pretoria Agreement or the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA), is a peace treaty between the government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) that was signed 2 November 2022, wherein both parties agreed to a "permanent cessation of hostilities" to end the Tigray war.
