TOP 09 (, ) is a liberal-conservative political party in the Czech Republic, led by Markéta Pekarová Adamová. 14 of its members sit in the Chamber of Deputies, and two of them are MEPs. History Foundation and participation in government The party was founded on 11 June 2009 by Miroslav Kalousek who left the Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party. Its first leader was Karel Schwarzenberg, who had previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the second Topolánek cabinet from January 2007 to March 2009, having been nominated by the Green Party for the post, and who had been elected to the Senate in 2004 as nominee of the Freedom Union – Democratic Union (US-DEU) and Civic Democratic Alliance (ODA) parties. In the 2010 parliament elections on 28–29 May 2010, TOP 09 received 16.7% of the vote and 41 seats, becoming the third largest party. Miroslav Kalousek
Miroslav Kalousek (born 17 December 1960) is a Czech politician, former leader of KDU-ČSL and TOP 09, and a member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP) from 1998 until his resignation in 2021. He served twice as Finance Minister in the cabinets of Mirek Topolánek and then again from 2010 to 2013 in the government of Petr Nečas. Early life Kalousek was born in Tábor. He studied chemistry at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague. Between 1984 and 1990, Kalousek worked as a technician at the company Mitas Praha. After the Velvet Revolution, Kalousek became a member of the state service. From 1993 to 1998, he was a deputy minister at the Ministry of Defense, responsible for the budget, army restructuring and acquisitions. Markéta Pekarová Adamová (born 2 October 1984) is a Czech Republic, Czech politician who is the President of the Chamber of Deputies (Czech Republic), President of the Chamber of Deputies since 2021 and leader of TOP 09 since 2019. She has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic, Chamber of Deputies since 2013. 2024 European Parliament Election In The Czech Republic
Elections were held in the Czech Republic from 7 to 8 June 2024 to elect 21 Czech representatives for the European Parliament, alongside the EU-wide 2024 European Parliament election. This was the fifth parliamentary election since the Czech Republic's EU accession in 2004, and the first to take place after Brexit. Electoral system The 21 members were elected through semi-open list proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency with seats allocated through D'Hondt method and a 5% electoral threshold for both single parties and coalitions of two or more parties. Both Czech and EU citizens were entitled to vote in the European election in Czech Republic provided they had a permanent or temporary residence in the country at least 45 days prior to the elections. This is a list of political parties in the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic has a multi-party system. Due to the electoral system used, a limited number of parties are successful in each parliamentary election. Parliamentary parties There are currently seven parties in the Chamber of Deputies – ANO 2011, the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), Mayors and Independents (STAN), the Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL), Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), TOP 09 and the Czech Pirate Party (Pirates). All of these parties except the SPD also have at least one seat in the Senate. 2024 Czech Regional Elections
2024 Czech regional elections were held on 20 and 21 September 2024 to elect all 675 members of all 13 Czech regional councils. The regional elections are held together with the first round of the 2024 Czech Senate election. The election resulted in landslide victory for ANO (political party), ANO which won 292 of 675 seats and finished first in 10 of 13 regions. Civic Democratic Party (Czech Republic), Civic Democratic Party of Prime Minister Petr Fiala finished second with 106 seats. ANO didn't win in South Bohemian region, South Moravian region and Liberec region. Victory in South Bohemian region was viewed as the only large win for Civic Democrats. It was attributed to South Bohemian Governor Martin Kuba who was seen as biggest victor of regional elections as he won 47.5% of votes and majority in South Bohemian assembly. Senate Of The Czech Republic
The Senate () is the upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The seat of the Senate is Wallenstein Palace in Prague. Structure The Senate has 81 members, chosen in single-seat constituencies through the two-round system. If no candidate receives a majority of votes in the first round, there is a second round between the two highest-placed candidates.
