TC Beirne Department Store
The TC Beirne Department Store is a heritage-listed former department store at 28 Duncan Street, Fortitude Valley, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Robin Dods and built in 1902. Further extensions were made through to 1938 to the designs of Dods and Hennessey & Hennessey. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 12 December 2003. History The TC Beirne Department Store was constructed for Thomas Charles Beirne in 1902 to the design of Robin Dods. The warehouse portion of the building was extended in 1906, and further extensions were made to the structure in 1910 and 1913, also to the design of Dods. By , architects Hennessey & Hennessey had undertaken extensive additions, and in 1938 an extra 30,000 square feet of floor space was added. In 1956 the building was sold to David Jones, and has changed ownership several times since. Geoffrey Pie undertook alterations in 1974. Fortitude Valley (often called "The Valley" by local residents) is an inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. William Hodgen, Junior
William Hodgen (1866–1943) was an architect in Queensland, Australia. Many of his works are now heritage-listed. He is also known as William Hodgen, junior. Early life William Hodgen was born in Toowoomba on 9 September 1866, the son of pioneer building contractor William Hodgen and his wife Eliza (née Nelson). Architectural career From 1886 to 1891, Hodgen was a cadet in the Queensland Colonial Architect's Office in Brisbane from 1886 to 1891. In 1891, he left for London, where he studied at the Royal Institute of British Architects, whilst working with a number of prominent London architects. He passed his examinations with honours in 1893 and was elected an Associate of the Institute. Hodgen returned to Queensland in December 1896. James McWhirter
James McWhirter (1848 - 22 July 1925) was an Australian businessman. He founded the prominent Brisbane department store McWhirters Ltd. McWhirter was born in Maybole in Ayrshire in Scotland. He went to Ayr in 1869 and became an apprentice draper, later entering into partnership with Matthew Scott as McWhirter & Scott. McWhirter migrated to Australia in 1878 and worked for D. L. Brown & Co. until 1883. He then entered into a drapery partnership with Duncan Sinclair in Stanley Street, South Brisbane, but sold his stake to Sinclair some years later and returned to working for Brown. In March 1894, amidst the 1890s Australian depression, McWhirter sold up in Brisbane and returned to England, but found economic conditions in London even worse when he arrived in May and returned to Australia in July. Ann Street runs parallel to Adelaide Street and is the northernmost street in the Brisbane CBD in Queensland, Australia.
