TCG 2. Inönü (S 331)
USS ''Blueback'' (SS-326), a in commission from 1944 to 1948, was the first submarine of the United States Navy to be named for the blueback salmon, also known as the sockeye salmon. She completed three war patrols in the South China Sea and Java Sea during World War II. She sank a 300-displacement ton submarine chaser as well as eight smaller vessels. After her U.S. Navy service, the submarine was transferred to Turkey, and was in commission in the Turkish Naval Forces from 1948 to 1973 as TCG ''İkinci Inönü'' (D-12) (also written TCG ''2. Inönü'' (D-2)), later renumbered S-18 and S 331. Construction and commissioning ''Blueback''s keel was laid down on 29 July 1943 by the Electric Boat Company at Groton, Connecticut. She was launched on 7 May 1944, sponsored by Mrs. William Brent Young, wife of Rear Admiral William Brent Young, and commissioned on 28 August 1944. Ship commissioning is the act or ceremony of placing a ship in active service and may be regarded as a particular application of the general concepts and practices of project commissioning. The term is most commonly applied to placing a warship in active duty with its country's military forces. The ceremonies involved are often rooted in centuries-old naval tradition. Ship naming and launching endow a ship hull with her identity, but many milestones remain before it is completed and considered ready to be designated a commissioned ship. The engineering plant, weapon and electronic systems, galley, and other equipment required to transform the new hull into an operating and habitable warship are installed and tested. The prospective commanding officer, ship's officers, the petty officers, and seamen who will form the crew report for training and familiarization with their new ship.
