TAF Linhas Aéreas was an airline based in Fortaleza, Brazil. It operated regional passenger and cargo services. Today, the owner continues services with a ''TAF Taxi Aéreo'' or TAF Air Taxi, using Cessna 208 Caravans for sporadic flights in the interior of northeast Brazil. History The airline was established and started operations as an air taxi company (Táxi Aéreo Fortaleza) in 1957 by pilot João Ariston Pessoa de Araújo, who was born in Cascavel. In 1992, TAF started operating night cargo flights for the Correios, Brazilian Postal Service between the cities of Recife, Fortaleza, João Pessoa, Paraíba, João Pessoa, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, Juazeiro do Norte and Sobral, Ceará, Sobral, with a fleet of two Cessna 208 Caravan and two Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante. Lufthansa Flight 181, a Boeing 737-230C jet airliner (reg. D-ABCE) named ''Landshut'', was hijacked on 13 October 1977 by four militants of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine while en route from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to Frankfurt am Main, West Germany. The hijacking aimed to secure the release of eleven notorious Red Army Faction leaders held in West German prisons and two Palestinians held in Turkey. This event was part of the so-called German Autumn, intended to increase pressure on the West German government. The hijackers diverted the flight to several locations before ending in Mogadishu, Somalia, where the crisis concluded in the early morning hours of 18 October 1977 under the cover of darkness.
