T.F. Callahan
Timothy F. Callahan (March 1, 1856 – October 22, 1934) was an American politician and businessperson from Maine. Callahan, a Maine Democratic Party, Democrat from Lewiston, Maine, Lewiston, served one term in the Maine House of Representatives (1891–1892). He also was elected by the Maine Legislature to serve as the third Maine State Auditor (1913–1915). Callahan's parents, John and Margaret Callahan, were both Irish immigrants. He and his brother Eugene Callahan were merchants. The brothers erected two Renaissance-style commercial buildings in downtown Lewiston; the first in 1892 and the second in 1910–11. They sold trunks, hats and men's clothing. Maine Democratic Party
The Maine Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Maine. After the Civil War, Democrats were a minor player in a political scene dominated by the Republican Party. However, during the 1950s, Edmund Muskie led an expansive political insurgency culminating in his election as Governor of Maine and successive Democratic elections to both state and national offices. From 2012 to 2019, despite having a Republican governor in Paul LePage, the party remained strong, holding key offices in the state government and the U.S. Congress and maintaining a majority in the Maine House of Representatives for six of LePage's eight years in office. Lewiston (; ; officially the City of Lewiston, Maine) is the second largest city in Maine and the most central city in Androscoggin County. The city lies halfway between Augusta, the state's capital, and Portland, the state's most populous city. The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes, though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 9,000 citizens of the state. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine House of Representatives usually have outside employment as well. The Maine Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maine. It is a bicameral body composed of the lower house Maine House of Representatives and the upper house Maine Senate. The Legislature convenes at the State House in Augusta, where it has met since 1832. The House of Representatives consists of 151 members, each chosen from single-member constituencies. The Maine State Auditor is a statutory state executive position in the government of the U.S. state of Maine. According to the Office of the State Auditor's webpage, the primary purpose of the position is "to audit the financial statements of the State of Maine and expenditures of federal programs". The Office of State Auditor was created in 1883 to examine the accounts held by the Maine State Treasurer. Originally a three-member committee, the single State Auditor position was created in 1907. State Auditors are elected by the Maine Legislature for a term of four years and each Auditor is limited to two four-year terms.
