T.A.G. Hungerford Award
The City of Fremantle T.A.G. Hungerford Award is given biennially to a full-length manuscript of fiction or narrative non-fiction by a Western Australian author previously unpublished in book form. It is sponsored by the City of Fremantle, Fremantle Press, Fremantle Library and ''The West Australian''. First established in 1988, the award was set up to discover and develop new writers from Western Australia who have not previously been published in book form. In 2010 the prize money was doubled to $12,000. As of 2018, the City of Fremantle pledged to support the award for a further six years. The prize money received by the winner will be $15,000 for the 2020, 2022 and 2024 award. The winner receives a cash prize and a publishing contract with Fremantle Press. Many of the shortlisted writers also go on to be offered publishing contracts either by Fremantle Press or other publishing houses. City Of Fremantle
The City of Fremantle is a local government areas of Western Australia, local government area in the south of Perth, Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district. History The City of Fremantle is named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV "all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales". In 1848 a town trust was formed comprising a chairman and a committee of five. For the next twenty-three years they set about constructing roads and many public buildings with the use of convict labour. By 1870 the population of Fremantle had reached 3,796 and it was a moderately flourishing town, resulting in a move among the colonists to secure greater control of the management of their affairs. Holden Sheppard
Holden Sheppard (born June 26, 1988) is an Australian novelist. His debut young adult novel, ''Invisible Boys,'' won multiple accolades including the 2018 T.A.G. Hungerford Award and the 2019 Western Australian Premier's Book Award and was adapted as a 2025 television series of the same name. His writing often focuses on themes of masculinity, sexuality and mental health. Early life Sheppard was born in the country town of Geraldton in Western Australia. At the age of 18, he moved to Perth and studied a bachelors of English literature at Edith Cowan University. While he was studying, he was also working part time as a grocery store assistant in Woolworths Supermarkets as a stock taker.
