Sălașu De Sus
Sălașu de Sus (, ) is a commune in Hunedoara County, Transylvania, Romania. It is composed of eleven villages: Coroiești (''Korojesd''), Mălăiești (''Malajesd''), Nucșoara (''Nuksora''), Ohaba de sub Piatră (''Kőaljaohába''), Paroș (''Parospestere''), Peștera (''Pestere''), Râu Alb (''Fehérvíz''), Râu Mic (''Vajdej''), Sălașu de Jos (''Alsószálláspatak''), Sălașu de Sus, and Zăvoi (''Macesd''). The commune lies at the foot of the Retezat Mountains, on the banks of the river Strei and several of its tributaries: the Paroș, Râul Alb, Sălaș, and Sibișel rivers. Two thirds of the commune's area is used for agriculture. Sălașu de Sus is located in the southern part of Hunedoara County, south of the county seat, Deva. A commune (''comună'' in Romanian language, Romanian) is the lowest level of administrative subdivision in Romania. There are 2,686 communes in Romania. The commune is the rural subdivision of a Counties of Romania, county. Ion Itu (born Ioan Itul; November 8, 1935–April 5, 2006) was a Romanian literary critic and essayist. Born in Sălașu de Sus, Hunedoara County, his parents were Ioan, a health inspector, and his wife Susana (''née'' Itul). He attended primary school in his native village from 1942 to 1946, followed by gymnasium in nearby Pui (1946–1949) and high school in Petroșani (1949–1953). Petroșani (; Hungarian: ''Petrozsény''; German: ''Petroschen'') is a city in Hunedoara County, Transylvania, Romania, with a population of 31,044 as of 2021. The city has been associated with mining since the 19th century. History "Pietros" means "stony, rocky" in Romanian. The city of Petroșani was founded in the 17th century (around 1640) with the name Petrozsény.
