Sören Nordin
Ernst Sören Nordin (5 September 1917, in Forsa, Hälsingland – 6 September 2008) was a Swedish harness racing driver and trainer who later started a stable in America. Nordin won 3,221 races in 10 different countries as a driver, he won the Swedish Trotting Derby 11 times – still a record. In 1950, Nordin won the ''Prix d'Amérique'', and in 1953 the '' Elitloppet''. 21 times, Nordin was the champion driver at Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm, Sweden's premier track. In 1981, he moved to the United States to set up the Team Nordin stable together with his son, Jan, training their trotters during the winter at Pompano Park's training center. Elitloppet
Elitloppet (literally: "The Elite Race") or Solvallas Internationella Elitlopp is an annual, invitational Group One harness event that has taken place at Solvalla Racetrack in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1952. The competition is regarded as one of the most prestigious international events in trotting. The winner is decided through two qualifying rounds and a subsequent final later the same day. Both the eliminations and the final are raced over the mile. The overall purse for the 2022 event was SEK11,350,000, equalling approximately US$1,073,000. In 2002 the Italian champion Varenne, (considered the strongest trotter of all time), took it in a world record time of 1:10.4 in the elimination and then bested that mark by winning the final in 1:10.2 – the fastest mile ever trotted around three turns. Pompano Park
Harrah's Pompano Beach, formerly Isle Casino Racing Pompano Park and Pompano Park, is a casino and former standardbred harness racing track in Pompano Beach, Florida, owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment. Pompano Park opened in 1964. It was billed as "The Winter Home of Harness Racing", as its tropical South Florida location made it an ideal alternative for horsemen, when most of the racetracks to the north are subject to racing in snow, ice, and bitter cold conditions. The track operated its live racing meet for about ten months out of every year, with a short break from June to August. Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a specific gait (a trot or a pace). They usually pull a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, spider, or chariot occupied by a driver. In Europe, and less frequently in Australia and New Zealand, races with jockeys riding directly on saddled trotters ( in French) are also conducted. Frances Bulwark
Frances Bulwark (born 5 April 1945 ) was a Swedish Standardbred racing trotter and brood mare by Bulwark out of Frances Great by Kaffir Axworthy. Her most prestigious victories include six Swedish Championships (1950–51, 1953–56), five Scandinavian Championships (1950, 1952-1955), Åby Stora Pris (1950), Gran Premio delle Nazioni (1952) and Elitloppet (1953). At the end of her career, the mare had earned SEK591,420. Dan Patch Trainer Of The Year Award
The Dan Patch Trainer of the Year Award is an annual award created in 1985 by members of the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA). The Association's website states that their members' determination is aided by input from the American Harness Racing Secretaries plus logistic expertise provided by the United States Trotting Association. The award winner receives the Glen Garnsey Trophy, named in honor of the Hall of Fame trainer who died at the zenith of his career at age 52 in 1985 as the result of an automobile accident. European 5-year-old Championship
The 5-year-old European Championship, also called European 5-year-old Championship, is an annual Group One harness event that is arranged by the European Trotting Union, UET. The race takes place on a racetrack in one of the member countries of UET. The contenders are chosen by the different national trotting federations that are members of UET. Only 5-year-old European-born stallions and mares can be selected. The 5-year-old European Championship was raced for the first time in 1967. The 2009 championship was raced at Treviso Racetrack, Italy, on July 26, and had a purse of approximately US$132,000, or €100,000.
