Séamus Ryan (hurler)
James L. "Séamus" Ryan (1937 – 11 February 2023) was an Irish priest. He was a renowned lecturer and gifted hurler who played at senior level for the Limerick county team, winning the Munster Senior Hurling Championship title in 1955, alongside his older brother Liam (who also became a priest and lecturer in sociology in Maynooth) who captained the side. Their father Willie Ryan had also played inter-county hurling. From Cappamore, Co. Limerick, he went to St Patrick's College, Maynooth to study for the priesthood. At Maynooth he earned a doctorate and was ordained a priest in 1961. Fr. Seamus with the benefit of a German Government scholarship to the University of Munster in Westphalia, Germany, studied under young Professor Ratzinger later Pope Benedict. 1955 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1955 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 69th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 24 April 1955 and ended on 4 September 1955. Cork were the defending champions, however, they were defeated in the provincial series. Wexford won the title following a 3-13 to 2-8 defeat of Galway in the final. Teams A total of fourteen teams contested the championship, the same as the previous championship, however, there were some changes on personnel. Antrim withdrew from the senior championship, while Wicklow fielded a team in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship. Cappamore Hurlers
Cappamore () is a small town in northeast County Limerick in the midwest of Ireland. It is also a parish in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. Location and facilities Cappamore is 20 km east of Limerick city, on the banks of the Mulcair River. The village is overlooked by the Slieve Felim Mountains and is on the R505 road (Limerick city centre is 23 km by road). It has a rich agricultural hinterland in which the dairy industry is prominent. The town has several pubs, grocery shops and filling stations, a GP surgery, pharmacy, bookmaker shop and veterinary clinic.
