Séamus Downey
Séamus Downey (born 13 June 1960) is a former cyclist from Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland. He competed in the individual road race event at the 1984 Summer Olympics for Ireland and for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games. Career Downey started cycling for Banbridge Cycling Club as his uncle was also a member. He was selected to represent Northern Ireland at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia in the road cycling event, despite never having left the island of Ireland before. Following the Commonwealth Games, he aimed to compete at the Olympics. He qualified for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States under the coaching of Pat McQuaid whom had arranged a sponsorship with Raleigh Bicycle Company so that the Irish athletes always rode their bikes. Banbridge
Banbridge ( ) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies on the River Bann and the A1 road and is named after a bridge built over the Bann in 1712. It is in the civil parish of Seapatrick and the historic barony of Iveagh Upper, Upper Half. The town began as a coaching stop on the road from Belfast to Dublin and thrived from Irish linen manufacturing. The town was home to the headquarters of the former Banbridge District Council. Following a reform of local government in Northern Ireland in 2015, Banbridge became part of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. It had a population of 17,400 in the 2021 census. The town's main street is very unusual, rising to a steep hill before levelling out. In 1834 an underpass was built as horses with heavy loads would faint before reaching the top of the hill. The 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XIX Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Delhi 2010, were an international multi-sport event for the members of the Commonwealth that was held in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010. A total of 4352 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events, making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date.
