Sælsøen
Seal Lake (), also known as Sael Lake, Saelso, Saelsöen and Sælsø, is a land-locked freshwater fjord in southern King Frederick VIII Land, in Greenland's northeastern coast. The Danish weather station Danmarkshavn —the only inhabited place in the area— lies about to the east. The lake and its surroundings are part of the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. The Seal Lake was named by the Denmark expedition to East Greenland 1906–1908. It was named after a seal which expedition members allegedly had seen swimming in it. Captain Alf Trolle reported, however, that the original name had been Store Sø (Big Lake) or Lakse Sø (Salmon Lake). Geography Seal Lake is a lake with a fjord structure. It is located in the Germania Land peninsula to the north of the Mørkefjord. A short river discharges its waters in the northern shores of the Dove Bay of the Greenland Sea. Mørkefjord
Mørkefjord, meaning in Danish "The dark fjord," is a fjord in King Frederick VIII Land, northeastern Greenland. History Mørkefjord was named by the 1906-1908 Denmark expedition, which established a second weather station at Mørkefjord, in order to compare meteorological observations data with those taken at Danmarkshavn . It had also been known as ''Vigfusdalfjord''. The 1938–1939 Mørkefjord expedition was named after it. They built their base hut and repaired their ship "Gamma" at a place by the fjord's shores. Danmarkshavn
Danmarkshavn (Denmark's Harbour) is a small weather station located in Dove Bay, on the northeastern shore of the Germania Land Peninsula, in Northeast Greenland National Park, Greenland. History The location was chosen as a suitable winter harbor by the Denmark expedition in 1906 for their ship Danmark (1906), ''Danmark''. It became the main base of the expedition, from where sledge journeys and scientific observations were carried out. Description The permanent population of the base is six. Danmarkshavn is also known as the northernmost location on the coast of the Greenland Sea that non-icebreaking vessels can pass through. Therefore, it is resupplied by cargo ship in August every other year; thus the population increases somewhat for a brief time every other August. The ice situation varies, and some years it is not possible to reach the station, other years it is ice-free further north. Germania Land
Germania Land or Germanialand is a peninsula in northeastern Greenland. Despite the high latitude it is largely unglaciated. History This peninsula was named by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen, leader of the Danmark expedition, to commemorate its survey by the Second German North Polar Expedition led by Carl Koldewey in 1869 on the vessel ''Germania'' and as a compliment to Alfred Wegener, the German member of the ''Danmark expedition''. In central Germania Land there is a cairn erected by the members of the Second German North Polar Expedition on 15 April 1870 in order to mark the farthest northern point they reached. Denmark Expedition
The Denmark expedition (), also known as the Denmark Expedition to Greenland's Northeast Coast and the Danmark Expedition after the ship's name, was an expedition to northeastern Greenland in 1906–1908. Despite being overshadowed by the deaths under tragic circumstances of three of the expedition's leading members ( Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872–1907), Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (1877–1907), and Jørgen Brønlund (1877–1907)), the Denmark expedition was not a failure. It achieved its main cartographic objectives and succeeded in exploring the vast region, drawing accurate charts of formerly unexplored coastlines and fjords, naming numerous geographic features, and gathering a wealth of scientific data. Northeast Greenland National Park
Northeast Greenland National Park (, ) is the world's largest national park and the 10th largest protected area (the only larger protected areas consist mostly of sea). Established in 1974, the Northeast Greenland national park expanded to its present size in 1988. It protects of the interior and northeastern coast of Greenland and is larger than the area of Tanzania, but smaller than that of Egypt. This means that the national park is bigger than 166 of the world's 195 countries. It was the first national park to be created in the Kingdom of Denmark and remains Greenland's only national park. Weather Station
A weather station is a facility, either on land or sea, with instruments and equipment for measuring atmosphere of Earth, atmospheric conditions to provide information for weather forecasting, weather forecasts and to study the weather and climate. King Frederick VIII Land
King Frederik VIII Land (; ) is a major geographic division of northeastern Greenland. It extends above the Arctic Circle from 76°N to 81°N in a North-South direction along the coast of the Greenland Sea. History This vast desolate region was still uncharted territory around 1900. It was explored by the 1906–08 Denmark Expedition, the 1909–12 Alabama Expedition and by J.P. Koch's 1912–13 Danish Expedition to Queen Louise Land, when the ruling monarch was Frederik VIII (1843–1912). The area between 79° and 81°30´N was first marked as 'King Frederik VIII Land', after King Frederik VIII of Denmark then the ruling monarch, by the 1906–08 Denmark Expedition in its maps of the region. Fjord
In physical geography, a fjord (also spelled fiord in New Zealand English; ) is a long, narrow sea inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier. Fjords exist on the coasts of Antarctica, the Arctic, and surrounding landmasses of the northern and southern hemispheres. Norway's coastline is estimated to be long with its nearly 1,200 fjords, but only long excluding the fjords. Formation A true fjord is formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley by ice segregation and abrasion of the surrounding bedrock. According to the standard model, glaciers formed in pre-glacial valleys with a gently sloping valley floor.
