Monastery Of São Vicente De Fora
The Church and Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, meaning "Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls", is a 17th-century church and monastery in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the most important monasteries and mannerist buildings in the country. The monastery also contains the royal pantheon of the Braganza monarchs of Portugal. History and art The original Monastery of São Vicente de Fora was founded around 1147 by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, for the Augustinian Order. Built in Romanesque style outside the city walls, it was one of the most important monastic foundations in mediaeval Portugal. It is dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa, patron saint of Lisbon, whose relics were brought from the Algarve to Lisbon in the 12th century. Monastery Of The Mónicas
The Monastery of the Mónicas ( pt, Mosteiro das Mónicas), located in São Vicente, Lisbon, was a Portuguese nunnery dedicated to the mother of Augustine of Hippo, Saint Monica. It later became a prison. Santa Apolónia Railway Station
The Santa Apolónia Station is the oldest railway terminus in Portugal. Graça Convent
Graça Convent ( pt, Convento da Graça) is one of the oldest convents in Lisbon. It is located in Largo da Graça, in the parish of São Vicente, on Lisbon's highest hill. It faces a belvedere overlooking the city and the Tagus River. It belonged to the Order of Saint Augustine Hermits and at one time served as their headquarters in Portugal. History Founded in 1271, at Monte de São Gens, Almofala, the convent was sponsored by Afonso III of Portugal. By 1551 the convent had 13 chapels. On 18 May 1566, the remains of Afonso de Albuquerque were buried in the chapel. Francisco de Saldanha da Gama and Fernando de Sousa e Silva are also buried at Graça. The Church of Santa Engrácia ( pt, Igreja de Santa Engrácia, ) is a 17th-century monument in Lisbon, Portugal. Originally a church it was converted into the National Pantheon (''Panteão Nacional'', ), in which important Portuguese personalities are buried.
