Saint Roch
Roch (lived c. 1348 – 15/16 August 1376/79; traditionally c. 1295 – 16 August 1327), also called Rock in English, was a Majorcan Catholic confessor whose death is commemorated on 16 August and 9 September in Italy; he was especially invoked against the plague. He has the designation of Rollox in Glasgow, Scotland, said to be a corruption of Roch's Loch, which referred to a small loch once near a chapel dedicated to Roch in 1506. It is also the name of a football club, St Roch's in Glasgow. He is a patron saint of dogs, invalids, falsely accused people, bachelors, and several other things. He is the patron saint of Dolo (near Venice) and Parma, as well as Casamassima, Cisterna di Latina and Palagiano (Italy). He is also the patron saint of the towns of Arboleas and Albanchez, in Almería, southern Spain, and Deba, in the Basque Country. São Roque, São Paulo
São Roque (meaning Saint Roch in Portuguese) is a city in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. It is part of the Metropolitan Region of Sorocaba. The population is 92,060 (2020 est.) in an area of 306.91 km². The city is at an altitude of 771 m. São Roque is connected by two main highways: Rodovia Raposo Tavares and Rodovia Castelo Branco. It is located 60 km west from the state capital. Some of the neighboring municipalities are Cotia, Vargem Grande Paulista, Ibiúna, Mairinque and Aluminio. São Roque de Minas is a Brazilian municipality located in the west of the state of Minas Gerais. Its population as of 2020 was 7,076 people living in a total area of 2,100 km2. The city belongs to the meso-region of Oeste de Minas and to the micro-region of Piumhi. It became a municipality in 1938. Geography The city center of São Roque de Minas is located at an elevation of 818 meters on a plateau about 10 kilometers east of the Serra da Canastra National Park entrance. Most of the municipality is occupied by the national park, which contains the source of the São Francisco River. The park contains 71,525 hectares with a perimeter of 173.4 km. São Roque do Pico () is a civil parish in the municipality of São Roque do Pico, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,316, in an area of 42.23 km². History The parish's name came from its ecclesiastical association with its patron saint, Saint Roch, and owing the number of São Roques in Portugal (not just at the local but also national level), the suffix ''do Pico'' was used to distinguish the locality. Locally, the local name has been reduced to ''São Roque'', while at the municipal level, ''São Roque do Pico'' is identified with the municipality. The first attempt to settle the island of Pico, around 1460, came from settlers from northern Portugal. After a stay on Terceira and Graciosa, these settlers migrated with the first Captain-Donatary Álvaro de Ornelas. Pico was then at part of the Captaincy of Faial. São Roque is a civil parish in the northern part of the municipality of Funchal, on the island of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 9,385, in an area of 7.50 km2. History The lands associated with São Roque were once part of a much larger parish of Sé, but later, for a short period it was part of São Pedro. The eccliastical parish of São Roque was dismembered from São Pedro and neighbouring São Martinho by Cardinal Infante Henrique on 3 March 1579. The Cardinal authorised the prelate of Funchal to create a new parish within the dominion of Sé. This was instituted with its parish seat at the ancient chapel of São Roque, constructed by the residents at the beginning of the 16th century, probably from local funds collected by Funchal's citizens (Saint Roch was the patron saint of Funchal protecting them from the plague, during the early part of the 16th century).
